More Than a Plaque 🍽️

Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital is doing more than feeding people inside its walls.

The hospital was recently recognized by Food Rescue US – North Fork for growing its partnership to redirect surplus prepared meals from the Greenhouse Grill to local groups serving East End residents facing food insecurity.

In 2025, the program rescued and redistributed 1,961 pounds of food, more than double the 937 pounds recovered in 2024.

Hospital officials said the effort helps cut down on food waste while getting quality prepared meals where they’re actually needed.

A plaque may have marked the moment, but the real impact is what keeps heading out the door.

Three Plays, One Powerful Spotlight 🎭

Next month, Northeast Stage is bringing a fresh spotlight to one of American theater’s earliest trailblazers, and the complex, often overlooked women she wrote about.

The Unseen Woman: Works by Susan Glaspell will run April 17–19 and April 24–26 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport, featuring three one-act plays: Trifles, Suppressed Desires and The Outside.

The trio may shift in tone, from mystery to satire to drama, but they all circle the same idea: the pressures, expectations and inner worlds of women, both then and now.

And this isn’t just a performance, it’s a full-on celebration of women across the North Fork. Opening night includes a reception highlighting women owned businesses like One Woman Wines & Vineyard, First and South, and Special Effects Salon & Spa. One performance will also be pay what you can, with a portion of proceeds supporting the National Women’s Law Center.

Each play brings something different to the table:

  • Suppressed Desires: leans into satire, poking fun at early 20th-century obsessions with psychoanalysis.

  • Trifles: written in just 10 days, delivers a darker, more haunting story about a murder investigation, and what happens when women’s perspectives are dismissed.

  • The Outside: explores isolation and the emotional weight of domestic life, where “home” becomes both refuge and restraint.

Rescue Squad Keeps Rolling 🚑

Greenport’s Rescue Squad is currently without its own Advanced Life Support certification. The state says the license was not revoked. Right now, the squad is limited to Basic Life Support because it is not maintaining the medications required for ALS status.

In practical terms, that means Greenport EMTs are still answering calls, and Stony Brook Emergency Medicine paramedics are still handling the advanced stuff, which is already a big part of how emergency response works on the North Fork.

State officials said residents should keep calling 911 the same way they always do. Mutual aid plans remain in place, and Greenport fire officials say there is no change in service to the community.

Top Tier Care 🏥

Peconic Bay Medical Center just landed on Newsweek’s 2026 list of America’s Best In State Hospitals, one of only 10 on Long Island to earn the nod.

The recognition places PBMC among 800 hospitals nationwide, evaluated on everything from clinical outcomes and patient experience to physician surveys and data compiled with Statista.

PBMC is part of Northwell Health, which had a dozen hospitals make the list, reinforcing the strength of its regional network.

And it’s not just one ranking. The hospital also picked up major specialty recognition, including:

  • 2026 Coronary Intervention Excellence Award

  • 2026 Pulmonary Care Excellence Award

  • Top 100 nationally for gastrointestinal care

  • An “A” safety grade from The Leapfrog Group

All of this comes as PBMC celebrates its 75th anniversary and continues to grow. ($)

Animal of The Week

Meet Lucy 🐾

Meet Lucy is living proof that resilience can look really, really cute. This three legged, two year old white husky has already been through more than most dogs her age, but you’d never know it from the way she shows up, bright eyed, affectionate, and ready to be your new favorite shadow.

Despite losing a leg after being hit by a car, Lucy hasn’t missed a beat. She’s playful, energetic, and fully committed to the important business of fetch, rope toys, and zooming around like nothing ever happened. She has a sweet, gentle temperament with just the right amount of goofy charm, and she’s especially talented at sneaking in a quick kiss when you least expect it. Lucy can be a little shy on first meet, but give her a minute, and maybe a treat or two, and she’ll be right by your side like she’s always been there. Bonus, she’s dog social too.

Lucy is the kind of dog who makes a house feel softer, warmer, and a little more joyful just by being in it. If you’re looking for a loyal sidekick who’s equal parts cuddle bug and playmate, with a story that makes her all the more special, Lucy’s ready to meet you.

Local Spotlight

Calling Future Lifeguards 🌊

There’s something about summer on the North Fork that just feels incomplete without the quiet presence of lifeguards watching over the shoreline. And behind every one of those umbrellas is someone who decided to step up, get trained, and take on the responsibility of keeping our beaches safe.

That’s exactly what the East End Seaport Museum is hoping to encourage with a pair of scholarships aimed at local teens and young adults ready to dive in. The program helps cover the cost of becoming a certified lifeguard or swim instructor, opening the door for the next generation of waterfront leaders.

It’s geared toward strong swimmers, age 16 and up, who are part of the local community and looking to spend their summer doing something that matters. Beyond the obvious perks of being outside and near the water, it’s a chance to build real skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose that goes well beyond a typical summer job.

Applications are open now through April 10, giving anyone with a love for the water, and a willingness to take on a meaningful role, a solid reason to go for it.
