The Lowdown

Southold Leads the Nest Count šŸ¦…

Remember when spotting an osprey was a rare treat? These days they’re practically the East End’s mascot, perched on poles, diving into creeks, and screaming at us from above.

Group for the East End just wrapped its latest osprey census, visiting about 500 nests across the five East End towns. The tally: 383 active pairs and 386 fledglings. That’s fewer than the 505 chicks counted in 2022, and storms, shifting fish patterns, predators, and water quality could all be to blame.

Southold led the pack with 145 active nests. Experts say the population is healthy, this dip is just a reminder that monitoring matters.

Three Plays, One Stage šŸŽ

The Corchaug Repertory Theater brings its third annual One-Act Festival to the Jamesport Meeting House on September 13 & September 14. The company, founded in 2022, is dedicated to new work and lesser-known plays, and this festival serves as its main fundraiser.

This year’s lineup features three original shorts:

-The Grind by Bob Kaplan: about an elderly widower navigating grief while working in a coffee shop
-Disarming by Peter Harrington: a surprisingly funny story about a bomb technician
-One Wish, Hold the Mayo by Nicholas Auletti: a DMV-inspired satire about bureaucracy and paperwork.

At just 75 minutes, it’s an easy night out. Tickets are $20 at the door or online.

Rain or Shine, the North Fork Eats šŸ½ļø

The North Fork Reform Synagogue’s annual Foodie Tour hit its 18th year this Sunday and for the first time ever, it poured all day. Didn’t matter. Hundreds still showed up, umbrellas in one hand and tote bags in the other, ready to taste, sip, and learn their way across 20 farms and food spots.

At Peconic Land Trust’s Charnews Farm, Slow Food East End ran demos, and Master Farmer Maria Plitt reminded everyone that growing food is really about patience, persistence, and planting extra for the wildlife.
