The Lowdown
End of an Era š«
The Candy Man, the spot for chocolate bunnies, and that unmistakable cocoa smell, has closed after nearly 40 years.
Owner Debbie Michta shared that a serious family medical diagnosis made it impossible to keep the business running at the standard people knew.
This wasnāt just a candy shop. It started with Debbieās grandfather making chocolate rabbits in a garage back in the ā60s, eventually turning a former gas station into one of the North Forkās most recognizable little red buildings.
The doors closed April 4, the family thanked the community for decades of support and signed off simply: goodbye, and sweet dreams. ($)

Jam Band Nights šø
Deadwood & Friends, a loose, ever evolving North Fork jam band, is turning a Peconic barn into something that feels a lot like a 1970s Grateful Dead scene.
It started with Southold drummer Joe Campisi, inspired by Levon Helmās legendary Woodstock barn sessions and local musician Greg McMullenās pedal steel. From there, it grew organically, a rotating cast of local players showing up, plugging in, and figuring it out as they go.
Thereās no rehearsal. No real setlist. Songs stretch, wander, sometimes fall apart and come back together.
Their now annual shows at Treiber Farms started small, a hand-painted sign on Route 48 and a hope that maybe a few dozen people would show up. Instead, hundreds came. Lawn chairs, coolers, kids running around, people drifting in and out of the barn like it was someoneās backyard party.
Next up: a benefit show for the North Fork Chamber of Commerce this Saturday, April 11 at Greenport Harbor Brewery.
After that, itās back to the barn.

Southoldās Conservation Advisory Council is having a moment, and this spring, itās showing up all over town.
After shifting its focus last year from behind the scenes reviews to more public facing work, the CAC is rolling out a slate of hands on environmental projects. A new pollinator garden at Town Hall, a Green Expo, and a push to get residents more involved in how they care for their own slice of the North Fork.
The Town Hall garden is the centerpiece. Itāll sit just behind the building, a 700+ square foot space filled with native plants, designed to support pollinators and stay in bloom as long as possible.
Volunteers are invited to help plant it on May 6, part of a broader week of similar garden projects across the North Fork.
That same week, the CAC is teaming up with the North Fork Environmental Council for a Green Expo and Repair CafƩ on May 2 at the Peconic Lane Recreation Center, where residents can fix broken items, pick up compost bins, and get a crash course in everything from backyard composting to watershed awareness.

Party Like Itās 1999 š
Greenport PTO is bringing back the 90s with The 90s Rewind Fundraiser. An adults only night that leans all the way into the decade (yes, flannel counts as formal). Itās their second annual āfield trip fundraiser,ā which is really just a great excuse to get out, dress up, and pretend itās 1999 again.
Enjoy a full night of music, food, and the kind of nostalgic chaos that happens when you put a room full of adults in denim, neon, and throwback playlists. Itās 21+, so no kids just a proper night out with your friends who definitely still remember their AIM away message.
Behind it all, itās a fundraiser that goes right back into the school community, helping make those extra experiences happen for local students.
So dig out the old school fits, make a plan with your crew, and go be part of it.

Animal of The Week
Meet Kenji š¾
Meet Kenji, he is the kind of dog who makes you want to immediately say, āOkay, who let this sweetheart be available?ā Heās soft hearted, deeply loving, and clearly just wants a place where life finally feels steady.
Heās a total baby at heart, the cuddly, closeness seeking kind who wants to feel safe, loved, and part of the family. Kenji is dog social, sweet natured, and has an easygoing warmth that would make him a lovely companion in the right home. Heās also got a little athletic streak, so a secure setup is a must. The boyās got hops, and heās already shown heās not above testing the perimeter if the mood strikes.
What Kenji needs now is not perfection, just consistency: a patient person, a stable home, and a yard or routine that helps him feel safe and settled. In return, heāll give you the kind of wholehearted devotion only a dog like Kenji can. Somewhere out there is the person who makes his world feel steady for good, and Kenji seems more than ready to meet them.
