The Lowdown
50 Years Later đŚ
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the waterâŚJaws turns 50 this year, and the North Fork Arts Center is celebrating with a big-screen showing on Saturday, August 30 at 7 PM.
But thatâs not all, after the movie, stick around for a Q&A with Pat Mundus, daughter of legendary shark hunter Frank Mundus (aka the real-life inspiration for Quint, everyoneâs favorite cranky shark slayer). Patâs got plenty of her own sea stories too, she was one of the first female cadets at SUNY Maritime, worked 17 years as a shipâs deck officer, and later ran East End Charters.

Coast to Coast đ´ââď¸
Most of us dream about biking across the country. Southoldâs John Shine actually did it.
After retiring from a 25-year nursing career at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, 65-year-old Shine decided to tackle a bucket-list ride and raise money for a cause close to his heart: multiple sclerosis research.
The journey started June 6 in Bar Harbor, Maine. From there, Shine and 29 fellow riders pedaled 4,295 miles through 15 states, before rolling into Seattle on August 16. A total of 71 days and more than 164,000 feet of elevation. (Yes, your legs hurt just reading that.)
Along the way, tragedy struck when fellow rider Burke Flynt was killed in Illinois. The group carried on in his honor with the motto âBike for Burke.â
By the end, Shine raised $11,993 for MS research, smashing his $10K goal. ($)

Protecting Horseshoe Crabs đŚ
Horseshoe crabs have been scuttling around this planet for nearly 500 million years, long before dinosaurs even thought about showing up. On Long Island, theyâre more than just a funky-looking find on the shoreline. Theyâre a keystone species, which basically means the entire ecosystem leans on them. Shorebirds, for example, depend on their eggs to survive.
These âunsung heroesâ are now in trouble thanks to habitat loss and overharvesting. New York capped the 2025 harvest at 150,000 crabs and even shuts down harvesting during full and new moons (prime crab date nights). Still, the population is declining. A Horseshoe Crab Protection Act almost banned commercial harvesting last year, but Gov. Hochul vetoed it.
Local groups like Group for the East End and Cornell Cooperative Extension are fighting hard to make sure the next generation still sees these creatures crawling the beaches.
