The Lowdown

Veteran, Mentor, Advocate 🎖️

At 91 years young, LeRoy Heyliger is still making an impact. On March 27, the Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association named him their 10th Civic Leader of the Year, celebrating a lifetime of service.

Air Force veteran? Check.
25 years with the U.S. Postal Service? Done.
Dedicated deacon at Unity Baptist Church since 1994? Absolutely.

Mr. Heyliger has spent decades mentoring individuals in recovery, advocating for affordable housing, and serving on the Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force.

Simply put, he’s a pillar of the community. And now, he’s got the official recognition to prove it. ($)

Pickleball + History 📜

The 4th Annual "History in the Making" Pickleball Tournament is back on Saturday, June 7, at Tasker Park in Peconic—and it’s all for a great cause. Proceeds go to the Southold Historical Museum, so you can smash, dink, and volley your way into the history books.

Two ways to play:
🕘 Morning Session (9 a.m. - 12 p.m.) – Round-robin style. Switch partners. Keep it social.
🎾 Afternoon Session (12:30 p.m.) – Competitive team tournament. Double elimination. Time to bring your A-game.

Entry is $55 per player ($60 after April 15), and space is limited. Rain date is June 8.

This tourney has been a community favorite since 2022—so whether you're a pro, a casual player, or just in it for the snacks, sign up and play for a little piece of history.

From Pool Days to Paydays

Want to spend your summer by the water and get paid for it? The East End Seaport Museum and Southold Rec Department are making it happen with eight scholarships for local teens to become certified lifeguards or water safety instructors.

Here’s the deal:
✅ You’ve gotta be 16+ and live in Southold.
✅ Write a quick essay about responsibility, maturity, or your connection to the community’s marine heritage, and email it to [email protected]
✅ Apply by Friday, April 11.

Winners get their training covered at Peggy Tuttle’s American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Courses or Water Safety Instructor courses at the School of Fish in Rocky Point. Plus, they’ll be recognized at the East End Seaport Museum’s season opener on May 22. ($)
