Horseshoe Crabs Need a Hero 🦀
There’s a fight brewing on the beach, and it’s not over a parking spot.
For the second year in a row, New York lawmakers are asking Governor Kathy Hochul to protect one of the oldest creatures on the planet: the horseshoe crab. The bill would ban harvesting these helmet-headed survivors for bait and biomedical use. Hochul vetoed it last year after some lawmakers worried fishermen wouldn’t have enough bait for conch and eels.
But environmental groups say that argument doesn’t hold water. They point out that conch and eels don’t actually eat horseshoe crabs in the wild, and there are plenty of alternative baits out there.
Horshoe crabs are essential to coastal ecosystems and the birds that depend on them for food. Connecticut and New Jersey already have bans in place, and Massachusetts has tight limits. So why not New York?

Order in the Court 🐜
Orient part-timer and former lawyer Robin Newman just dropped her tenth children’s book, Trial and Error, and it’s exactly as delightful as it sounds.
The story follows Sawyer, an ant lawyer who helps critters solve their legal woes, think a speeding snail, two bickering squirrels, and (of course) a jaywalking chicken.
Each case teaches kids about evidence, witnesses, and fairness, all wrapped up in laugh-out-loud moments and clever illustrations by Deborah Zemke.
