An Award With Global Impact šø
The North Fork Arts Center was the place to be on June 14 as it hosted the 10th annual BarTur Photo Award, aka a global celebration of photography thatās all about making the world a better place. Think less selfies, more stories that shake your soul.
Past winners from 23 countries showed work ranging from Ukrainian war zones to French Polynesian arts festivals, Olympic moments, and even gritty NYC subway scenes. If a pictureās worth a thousand words, this gallery could write a novel.
The BarTur Award was started by Amnon Bar-Tur, a photographer who now calls Orient home. The award is laser-focused on photojournalists using their lenses to shine light in dark places. He teamed up with NFACās Tony Spiridakis to bring the celebration to the North Fork.
This yearās award includes a $30,000 grant to fund a photo project with real-world impact. Submissions poured in from over 3,000 photographers in 86 countries, and the winners will be revealed July 19.

When a Quilt Says More Than Words š§µ
Sometimes the most powerful stories arenāt shouted, theyāre stitched. Thatās the spirit behind Greenportās newest creation: a community-made quilt thatās set to debut at the villageās Juneteenth celebration on June 28.
This isnāt your average craft project. Inspired by the AIDS Memorial Quilt, this powerful patchwork is being brought to life by the North Fork chapter of Coming to the Table, Clinton Memorial AME Zion Church, and the Southold Anti-Bias Task Force. This yearās theme? āHaving Their Say: What Freedom, Equality, and Justice Mean to Them.ā Because if anyoneās got something to say about the future, itās the next generation.
One name youāll hear a lot: Faith Welch. Sheās a Greenport High junior and the eventās Youth Ambassador. Sheās making sure the next wave knows what Juneteenth is all about.
The celebration kicks off with a parade and lands in Mitchell Park for music, dancing, spoken word, and the quilt unveiling at the North Fork Arts Center. Expect performances from the Harambee Dance Company, Afro-Brazilian drummers BatalĆ”, and voices of all ages sharing what freedom looks and feels like to them.
