The Lowdown
Another Barn Fire Hits Wells Farm 🔥
Wells Farm on Sound Avenue is dealing with another tough chapter after a barn fire broke out yesterday, heavily damaging a structure toward the rear of the property. It marks the second fire at the historic farm in less than six months.
Multiple departments responded to bring the blaze under control, while Sound Avenue was shut down during the effort.
There was some relief amid the damage: chickens and baby chicks were inside the barn, but most are believed to have been saved.
The latest incident comes just months after a November fire that hospitalized three people and killed several animals, underscoring a difficult stretch for one of the East End’s most historic farms. ($)

A Century of Drossos 🍦
For generations of North Fork families, summer has meant one thing: a stop at Drossos for mini golf, ice cream cones, and late night fries, it’s the kind of place where memories tend to stick.
At the center of it all is Minnie Costas, who just celebrated her 100th birthday, and nearly 50 years running the family business. A Queens native, she took over Drossos in 1979 after her father’s passing and never really slowed down. Even now, she’s still involved in the day to day.
The business has stayed firmly in the family. Her daughter, Elaine Fredericksson, joined in 2004, trading a Manhattan PR career for burgers, mini golf, and motel life. Together, they’ve kept the original spirit intact while evolving the property with updated rooms and an expanded food operation.

Oyster Farms Take a Brutal Hit 🦪
A historic deep freeze, the longest in 65 years, turned local waters into moving sheets of ice that crushed cages, dragged equipment across the bay, and wiped out parts of entire crops.
For many growers, the damage wasn’t subtle. Floating cage, typically the most efficient setup, were ripped apart, with some farmers losing years’ worth of gear in a matter of days. Replacing equipment that normally costs around $40,000 annually could now run upwards of $80,000 to $120,000 this season alone.
The losses go beyond hardware. Oysters take years to grow, so when a crop is destroyed, it’s not just inventory, it’s time, labor, and future revenue gone overnight. With at least 35 farms reporting damage, Suffolk County is pushing for a federal disaster declaration to unlock financial relief.
