BID Unveils $100K Vision 💡

The Greenport Business Improvement District has about $100,000 in one time FEMA reimbursements to spend, and BID president Rich Vandenburgh has ideas.

At last week’s Village Board meeting, Vandenburgh outlined a slate of initiatives funded solely by those FEMA dollars. The proposals focus on three things: filling storefront vacancies, improving the streetscape and tackling public safety concerns.

Vacancy Plan
The BID currently counts about 17 storefronts that are vacant or for sale. To address it, the BID issued an RFP and selected Brown Harris Stevens’ commercial arm as a partner, stressing they would work alongside local brokers, not replace them.

The pitch is multifaceted: marketing, storytelling, incentives and practical help for new tenants. Vandenburgh floated the idea of a “village business concierge” to help prospective businesses navigate zoning and permits. He also suggested prioritizing year round staples, groceries, specialty markets, marine retail, repair shops, even childcare.

Mobile Security Units
The most contentious proposal: mobile security units in areas like Adams Street parking lots and near Mitchell Park.

Vandenburgh said members have raised concerns about loitering, harassment and illicit activity, and noted police can’t enforce violations they don’t personally witness.

A unit would cost about $20,000, with monitoring as low as $92 per month. The BID suggested contributing $10,000 from FEMA funds as part of a shared ownership structure with the village and police.

Ice Rink
Vandenburgh also pressed the village to move forward on the $1.2 million state grant announced in 2024 for a permanent skating rink.

He said the project has stalled and argued it could be installed by November 2026, possibly for less than $700,000, if action is taken this spring. He plans to bring a rink builder, Precision Ice Rinks, to present in March.

Tom Schaudel at Southold Social 🍽️

Southold Social has a new culinary director, and if Tom Schaudel has anything to say about it, things are about to get a little louder, looser and more lively.

Schaudel, a North Fork mainstay and partner at aMano, A Lure and By Hand Catering, has been in the restaurant game since 1968.

He’s not scrapping what’s there. The current menu stays as the foundation, but he’s layering in crab beignets, flatbreads and dialing up the raw bar with towers and crudo, the kind of additions that nudge a table toward ordering “one more thing.”

When he’s not in the kitchen, he’s usually on a stage somewhere across Long Island, guitar in hand. He calls it “the twilight of a mediocre musical career,” which tracks for someone who hasn’t eaten at home since 1972 and still prefers the buzz of a dining room to a quiet night in.

Policing and Protection 📣

Greenport is having some tough conversations. At the Village Board’s Feb. 19 work session, Mayor Kevin Stuessi addressed recent ICE activity in the village, including the Feb. 4 arrest of three men.

Stuessi said federal raids have already left an impact: families separated, businesses short-staffed, workers fearful. Agents have been spotted in Greenport multiple times since last August.

In response to public concern, Southold Town unanimously approved a Public Safety Task Force on Feb. 10. The group will include town board members, police, a school representative, a Greenport village rep and a community member, a mix meant to keep lines of communication open.

The mayor is also continuing to push for more consistent policing in the village, especially with summer around the corner. Greenport is covered by Southold Town Police, which typically assigns one officer to the village when five officers are on duty. If staffing drops to four, the department minimum, that same officer covers greater Greenport and areas east. ($)
