Laurel Lakeās getting a glow-upācourtesy of some pint-sized scientists.
Peconic Community School students are diving into the āAdopt-a-Pondā program, turning the Laurel Lake Preserve into their very own outdoor classroom. Led by Bob Mozer and the Citizen Science Learning Center, the program's mission is clear: monitor local ponds for harmful algal blooms before things get slimy.
But this isnāt your average nature walk. These students will be mapping biodiversity with GIS tech, testing water quality like pros, and getting hands-on with environmental science all year long. ($)

Joe Slovak had a dream: build a multi-sport facility for the North Fork. The original plan ā a full-scale complex called Sports East ā got benched by zoning issues in Mattituck. But Joe didnāt hang up his sneakers.
Flash forward: His wife spots a Facebook post from NoFo Wellness Center in Cutchogue. Theyāre looking to lease space for sports activities. Joe sees the post, tours the space, and basically says, āGame on.ā
Now, Gym Days Multisport is open 7 days a week with basketball, soccer, pickleball, volleyball, camps, clinics, dodgeball, and yes ā even movie nights. Itās got something for everyone from toddlers to seniors.
For Joe, this isnāt just a gym. Itās a community hub, a love letter to youth sports, and a dream decades in the making. As he says: āIf thereās a will, thereās a way.ā
