The Lowdown

Greenport’s expanded paid parking program is heading into its first full summer season, and not everyone is thrilled about it.

Village officials say the metered parking expansion is designed to ease congestion, improve parking turnover and generate revenue for long overdue road, sidewalk and curb repairs. Residents who live downtown, however, say they're being treated like tourists when it comes to parking near their own homes.

The newly expanded program includes metered lots off Main Street and Adams Street, charging $3.50 per hour from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Village officials estimate paid parking could generate about $165,000 annually, helping offset infrastructure costs that would otherwise fall on taxpayers.

Residents have pushed for accommodations such as parking permits or discounted rates for year round locals. An online petition seeking changes has already gathered more than 110 signatures. ($)

The Little Train That Could 🚂

After a year sidelined for repairs, the Greenport Express Miniature Railroad is rolling again. The beloved attraction officially reopens June 6 and will operate Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 3 PM throughout the season.

Tucked into the woods off Moores Lane, the miniature railroad has become one of Greenport’s most nostalgic attractions. The current train may be new, but the memories run deep. The original railroad delighted families for nearly three decades before closing in 2012.

Its return was anything but easy. The Greenport Rotary spent seven years fundraising, gathering more than $1 million through donations and in kind support to purchase the train, build a quarter-mile track and construct the station and facilities.

Local Spotlight

Beachside Eatery & Boutique 🏖️

There’s something about a beach day that feels even better when there’s good food, great people, and a little creativity mixed in.

That’s the idea behind Third Culture Club, a new snack bar and boutique opening at Orient Beach State Park this summer. The new spot is serving globally inspired coastal bites, craft beverages, local art, and a welcoming atmosphere built around the idea that every culture can pull up a chair.

This isn’t just another place to grab a snack between swims. Third Culture Club is planning art workshops, live music, creative programming, and community events designed to make the beach feel like more than just a destination.

Their soft opening is set for Friday, June 5, offering locals and summer visitors a first look at what’s shaping up to be one of the most unique additions to Orient Beach State Park this season.
