The Lowdown
Solar Power or Local Headache âď¸
The Southold Town Planning Board is still debating a proposed solar facility at the old Cutchogue landfill, and the public hearing has been extended until April 7 at 5 pm to get more community input.
Some residents arenât thrilled. Concerns have been raised about potential safety hazardsâlike inverters, transformers, and whether the installation could mess with the landfillâs protective cap.
Jeremy Karpf from Summit Ridge Energy says not to worry. He argues that capped landfills are prime spots for solar projects since they canât be developed otherwise. Plus, the solar panels would be installed using concrete ballastsâno digging, no damage.
Got an opinion? The Planning Board is still taking public comments until April 7. ($)
Holy Schmitt! đ
Schmittâs Farm isnât just a farmâitâs a North Fork institution. For over 100 years, this 165-acre, family-run operation in Riverhead has been feeding the community and keeping the farming tradition alive. Their farm stand on Sound Avenue has been a go-to spot since 2003, offering fresh, locally grown produce.
Speaking of produceâSchmittâs Farm is all about variety. They grow everything from lettuce and sweet corn to beets, herbs, and their famous Holy Schmittâs Homemade Horseradish, which has a cult following of spice lovers.
Farming isnât easy, but the Schmitts are in it for the long haul. With deep roots in the community and a passion for innovation, theyâre keeping North Fork agriculture thriving one harvest at a time.
Another Day Another Greenport Political Controversy đ¤Śââď¸
Greenport Mayor Kevin Stuessi is under fire. Halfway through his first term, he's facing criticism over alleged overreach, enforcement tactics, and mismanagement.
Stuessiâs leadership style has rubbed many the wrong wayâincluding board colleagues, local business owners, and even his own staff. Meanwhile, a foreclosure judgment on his Clark Street home means he could be evicted soon, raising questions about his eligibility to serve.
But thatâs not all. Court records show a history of unpaid debts, including a lawsuit over a failed restaurant lease and a recent credit card case. On top of that, his driver's license has been suspended twice in six years for failing to respond to traffic summonses.
With all this coming to light, Greenport residents are left wonderingâcan Stuessi steer the village forward, or is he too caught up in his own challenges? ($)
