The Lowdown
Bettyâs Boutique đď¸
What started as a few yard sales at Marja Amesâ Mattituck home has turned into a $220,000 fundraising effort for local animals, and now itâs getting a permanent address.
Bettyâs Boutique is preparing to open its first storefront at 7785 Main Road in Mattituck on Oct. 24, selling donated clothing, household goods and other finds, with all proceeds benefiting the North Fork Animal Welfare League.
The whole thing started in 2023, when Ames planned one fundraiser for the shelter. Then the donations started arriving. And arriving. Five sales later, the first year alone had raised about $46,000.
The boutique is named for Betty, a one eyed cat Ames and her husband adopted after she was found in the rubble following 9/11.

Southoldâs 2027 Budget đ°
Southoldâs first draft of its 2027 budget is nearly $61.2 million, and residents could see a modest bump in their town property taxes.
Supervisor Al Krupskiâs tentative plan calls for a 2.87% increase in the tax levy, staying below New York Stateâs tax cap. Under the proposal, the property tax rate would rise 2.27%.
The town is trying to make the numbers work without a financial cushion itâs leaned on in recent years. Federal ARPA money is no longer available, mortgage tax revenue has dropped, sales tax revenue is expected to stay flat and costs for labor, fuel, heating and materials continue to climb.
Among the priorities that made the cut: a new Director of Code Enforcement to help oversee the townâs proposed short-term rental regulations, police staffing and equipment, and money to keep the townâs vehicle fleet up to date.
Nothing is final yet. The Town Board will spend October digging into the proposal before public hearings Nov. 4

Rooted North đˇ
After joining forces in 2023, Suhru Wines and Lieb Cellars are officially becoming Rooted North, giving the Cutchogue vineyard a new name, logo and look designed to better reflect the six partners behind it.
The change is mostly on the label. Winemaker Russell Hearn is staying put, and so are the wines. As partner RenĂŠe Fondacaro put it: theyâre known for making good wine, and theyâd like to keep that part exactly the same.
Sustainability remains a big part of the operation, too, with practices ranging from hand harvesting and mechanical weed control to equipment that recovers 90% of sprayed materials.

Local Spotlight
Art in Motion đĽ
Art doesnât always need a gallery wall. Sometimes, two oval screens inside a cafĂŠ will do just fine.
East End Arts Council members are invited to apply for Panoramica: Video Art Residency, an open call giving local artists the chance to showcase video, animation, moving image and experimental media in a pretty unexpected setting.
Selected works will be displayed on two oval screens built directly into the walls at Panoramica CafĂŠ, turning the space into a small, immersive showcase for moving art.
