The Lowdown

12,000 Years of History 🏹

The Southold Indian Museum is doing what it does best this month, connecting the dots between ancient history and the present. In honor of Native American Heritage Month, they’re rolling out a lineup that’s part history lesson, part treasure hunt.

The museum works hand in hand with the Unkechaug Nation and Shinnecock Nation, making sure every display honors the people and cultures that shaped this land.

On Sunday, November 16, it’s Free Artifact Identification Day. Bring your arrowheads, pottery, or mystery relics and a panel of experts will help you uncover their stories.

If you can’t make it on the 16th, you can still catch an off-site presentation at Peconic Landing on Nov. 10, where museum president Lucinda Hemmick and museum photographer Ephraim Horowitz will showcase select pieces and stories from Long Island’s earliest days. ($)

ReWild Takes Root 🌿

From Montauk to Mattituck, the kids got dirt under their nails.

The ReWild Long Island movement, is all about returning land to its natural state and letting nature do its thing, is taking root across the East End. This year, students from both forks are leading the charge, growing food, planting native gardens, and proving that change can start with a shovel and some sunlight.

North Fork

At Mattituck High, the Botany Club turned an overlooked courtyard into a thriving native plant garden with help from ReWild’s North Fork chapter, led by Nancy and Ralph Reinertsen.

Biology teacher Janine Ruland helped students land the ReWild grant, while senior Cindy Melgar led the charge to bring a little sunshine and biodiversity to campus.

Now the club plans to host garden days next summer to keep the project blooming.

South Fork

More than 30 students spent their summer digging into the ReWild Summer Program to Fight Hunger and Climate Change, logging over 1,000 volunteer hours.

The program ended with a sweet moment at Matthew’s Garden in East Hampton, where students planted native seeds and made a promise: keep growing, keep giving back.

Kids Took Over the Theater 🎥

The North Fork Arts Center just launched a Youth Advisory Board, giving local high schoolers the keys to Theater 4 every Friday at 8:15 PM The deal? Teens get in free, everyone else pays $10, and the kids pick the movies.

The idea started when Executive Director Tony Spiridakis got cornered by a sharp 15 year old who wanted to talk about Moonrise Kingdom. Her name? Sophie Heidemann. Her question? “Why aren’t you showing cooler films?” One conversation later, the Youth Advisory Board was born.

Now Sophie and her fellow film fanatics, Leone Bartolani, Nicholas Gianopulos, and Nate Steinfeld, are curating classics, leading post screening chats, and plotting an eventual teen run Greenport Film Festival.

Their early lineup reads like a crash course in cool: The Breakfast Club, Shaun of the Dead, Halloween, and Rebel Without a Cause. Later this season: Run Lola Run, The Holdovers, and Christmas Vacation.
