The Lowdown
Trouble at Mattituck Inlet šØ
Bailie Beach is running out of time and sand.
Local leaders are rallying to convince New York Stateās DEC to fund a crucial study that could save Mattituck Inlet from serious erosion. The Mattituck Park District says the jetties at the inletās mouth have been blocking the natural flow of sand for decades, starving the east side (Bailie Beach) while piling it up on the west. Now, the beach is so thin that one good norāeaster could punch a hole straight into the inlet.
A routine dredging planned for this fall got kicked to 2026, so the Park District is pushing for a bigger fix, a full-blown restoration under the Army Corpsā Section 111 program.
The catch? The feds wonāt move forward until a non-federal sponsor (like the DEC) agrees to share the cost of the study, which could run between $500,000 and $1 million.

Art & Ale šØ
Head upstairs at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. (Greenport location) this month and youāll find more than beer, youāll find artist Gavin Zeiglerās world of color, chaos, and curiosity.
His show, Postcards from the Rock, is a mashup of paint, pennies, stamps, and even old payroll checks, all pressed into wooden panels with serious precision.
Catch it through the end of October. Grab a pint, wander the walls, and see what treasures you can spot in the paint.

Meet Hubbard š¾
Meet Hubbard heās the kind of dog who steals your heart quietly, not with flashy tricks, but with calm eyes, gentle patience, and a soul thatās pure gold.
Heās house-trained, quiet, and a total pro at bedtime (no midnight wake-ups). He loves his routines, enjoys car rides, and has a soft spot for chew toys and tennis balls, just maybe keep an eye on playtime, because heās an enthusiast.
Heās affectionate without being clingy, calm indoors, and walks nicely on a leash. In short? Heās the dream roommate, tidy, polite, and full of love.
Hubbardās been waiting far too long for his person. Maybe that person is you. Come meet this sweet boy at the Southold animal shelter.

Trivia Time š§
Your brain deserves more than scrolling and skimming. Each week weāll hit you with one question designed to make you pause, scratch your head, and maybe argue with whoeverās sitting next to you. Think of it as a quick mental pit stop: a chance to flex your random knowledge, test your memory, or finally use that obscure fact you learned in 7th grade.
Which U.S. city loves pierogis so much that its Major League Baseball team hosts a āPierogi Raceā at every home game? |
Last Weekās Results

Answer: 1908
60% of you nailed it, not too shabby. The other 40%? Youāre still part of the trivia carpool. We all get there eventually.

Local Spotlight
North Forkās Rumrunning Past š„
The Floyd Memorial Library Podcast is pouring one out for history lovers with one of its latest episodes, a deep dive into the Prohibition-era rumrunning that once defined life along the North Fork and across Suffolk County.
Local historian and author Amy Folk dives into one of Long Islandās most thrilling eras: the age of rumrunning. Her book, Rumrunning in Suffolk County: Tales from Liquor Island, spills all the secrets of how the North Forkās sleepy harbors once buzzed with bootleggers, boats, and barrels of contraband.
From midnight drop-offs and hidden coves to the cat-and-mouse chases between smugglers and the feds, itās a story of guts, grit, and geography. Turns out, the coastline made the perfect cover for a little mischief.
