The Lowdown

Look Don’t Post šŸ¦…

The bald eagles are back, and they’d prefer to keep a low profile.

As sightings become more common on the East End, local conservationists are asking residents to think twice before posting eagle locations online. The concern: too much attention, especially during nesting season, can scare birds away from their nests and undo years of recovery work.

Turtleback Conservation Center’s executive director, Jennifer Murray, says recent social media posts have drawn crowds of photographers and onlookers to highly visible eagle sites in Southold Town, and at least one nesting pair has already gone quiet.

The advice is simple: enjoy the moment, keep your distance, and share sightings privately with conservationists instead of publicly online. Bald eagles nest on Long Island during the winter, often laying eggs in February, and even well meaning curiosity can interfere with their behavior. If a bird is watching you, you’re too close.

Southold’s MLK Tribute šŸ¤

On Sunday evening, Southolders braved ice, cold, and dark skies to gather at the Peconic Lane Recreation Center for the town’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. tribute, a night rooted in faith, music, and a shared promise to keep Dr. King’s work moving forward.

Organized by the Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force, the event brought together clergy from across traditions, local officials, students, and neighbors, all leaning into the idea of the ā€œbeloved community.ā€

Speakers from the Town Board reaffirmed Southold’s commitment to being a bias free community, calling it an ongoing journey, not a slogan. Community groups like Coming to the Table highlighted their work in racial healing and announced plans for an expanded Juneteenth celebration this summer. Students were recognized for thoughtful projects exploring what Dr. King’s legacy means today.

Animal of The Week

Meet Travis šŸ¾

Meet Travis, the kind of dog who’s been doing his best to stay patient while waiting for his forever person.

Travis is a 2 year old, high energy, big hearted guy who’s neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to head home, ideally with someone who’s looking for a true partner in adventure.

This athletic pup loves having a purpose. Training? Yes. Playtime? Absolutely. Tug? His love language. Travis is smart, toy motivated, knows his basic commands, and genuinely thrives when he’s engaged with his human. He’s also a water fan and would happily spend his day splashing around if given the chance.

Travis is dog social and does best with structure, consistency, and outlets for his energy, the kind of home where routines exist and walks, play, and bonding are part of daily life.

And once Travis loves you, he really loves you. Loyal, affectionate, and all in, he’s the kind of dog who wants to be part of everything, preferably as close as possible.

Medical experts from some of the region’s top cancer centers will share knowledge on innovative treatments and supportive therapies that can help guide patients from diagnosis through recovery and life beyond. Alongside clinical perspectives, natural health practitioners will explore integrative options including acupuncture, nutrition, herbs, meditation, reiki, and yoga, offering tools that support both body and mind.
