Big New Barn 🌸
If you’ve spotted a shiny new barn peeking through the pines on Sound Ave, that’s North Fork Flower Farm leveling up. After outgrowing their first space in Orient, they’ve planted roots on 24 acres in Southold, and this barn is a total game-changer.
Designed by co-owner/architect Kevin Perry, it’s got a ventilated second floor for drying flowers, triple the cooler space, and a front area turning into a farm stand + DIY bouquet bar.
NFFF grows 300+ varieties of flowers, herbs, and grasses. Selling wholesale, retail, and through their popular weekly bouquet subscriptions. Stop by to pick up blooms, take a workshop, or just sit outside, watch the butterflies, and soak in that magical flower-farm energy.

New Suffolk Gets a Playground 🛝
If you’ve driven past the historic New Suffolk School lately and spotted a big ol’ pile of dirt, no, it’s not a new art installation. It’s the start of a brand-new playground.
Just Kids, the group running the autism program at the schoolhouse, hit full enrollment this year (18 students), which triggered a state requirement for a bigger, safer playground. The school board fast-tracked approval at an Aug. 21 meeting, and by Sept. 9 the digging had begun.
Neighbors and local architects voiced concerns about the project’s speed and impact on the school’s historic look, and about not getting much advance notice. The board says they posted about it online and held a special meeting, but admitted they thought this wouldn’t happen until 2026.

A new iScience paper says daily reading for pleasure in the U.S. has dropped 40% in 20 years, but before you panic about the death of books, local librarians say we’re just reading differently.
Local libraries have reported fewer physical checkouts (Mattituck-Laurel went from 65,000 books in 2001 to 21,000 in 2024) but eBook and audiobook downloads are soaring. Turns out we’re still devouring stories, just with more earbuds and fewer hardcovers.
Librarians say between our phones, jobs, and everything else demanding our attention, people are pressed for time, so they’re listening to books, trying graphic novels, or sneaking in chapters where they can. ($)

Whitney Hubbard Back in the Frame 🖼️
Greenport’s favorite painter is back in the spotlight 150 years after his birth, and Floyd Memorial Library just turned their gallery into a love letter to his work. The new exhibit features 70+ pieces, including “response” works from local artists Jeff Lee and Alma Vasquez.
Expect ephemera, photos, even paintings done on the backs of candy ads (Depression-era artists got scrappy). You’ll also find oral histories, a rare sketch-to-finished-painting pair, and nods to Hubbard’s wife Ruth, the musical powerhouse who led choirs all the way to Carnegie Hall.
Mark your calendars: Oct. 25 is Whitney Hubbard Appreciation Day, complete with a guided tour, community show-and-tell of privately owned paintings, and a musical tribute to Ruth.
