Fishers Island vs. Southold š„
Things are getting spicy across the Sound. The Fishers Island Ferry District is suing the Town of Southold (plus its Police Department and Town Board) for $2 million after what theyāre calling an illegal police takeover of one of their houses.
What Went Down
On New Yearās Day, Southold police allegedly busted into 357 Whistler Ave. with crowbars and set up shop, evicting ferry workers without warning. The house belonged to the Ferry District, and officials say the cops had zero permission to be there.
The Back Story
Southold PD took over police duties on Fishers Island. The old barracks? Not up to par. So the Town Board held a quickie emergency vote on December 17 to claim the Ferry-owned house. No public hearing. No agreement with the Ferry District. Just, surprise occupancy.
Whatās Next
Thereās a pre-motion hearing June 25 with Justice Joseph Farneti in Riverhead. Grab your popcorn, this one's a legal standoff with real estate, rights, and island autonomy on the line.

Ospreys Are Having a Moment š¦
The East Endās favorite fish-loving raptors are back, and environmentalists are watching closely.
Group for the East End is leading a full-blown osprey census, with the help of some very dedicated volunteers. Theyāre checking in on hundreds of nests across the North Fork, South Fork, and Shelter Island to see whoās home, whoās hatching, and how the populationās holding up.
Phase one kicked off Memorial Day weekend to ID active nests.
Phase two runs through mid-July to count the kiddos (aka fledglings).
So far, theyāve spotted around 200 active nests. The last census? 353 nests, 505 baby birds. Not too shabby.
In 1976, ospreys were officially listed as endangered in New York. Pesticides and development nearly wiped them out. But thanks to conservation efforts, like more than 250 nesting platforms, they made a major comeback and are no longer endangered. ($)
