Southold vs Airbnb š”
If youāve got a short-term rental in Southold, it might be time to read the fine print. Southoldās got about 1,500 properties on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo. Together, they rake in an estimated $11 million a year, with some hosts making over $100K annually.
Town code says stays must be at least 14 nights, but only if the rental has a valid permit. Spoiler alert: many donāt. This year, Southold started using a program called Rentalscape to scan listings and tax records. The result? 400+ properties flagged for breaking the 14-night rule.
Violators will get:
A friendly heads-up
A strongly worded warning
A final notice before the hammer drops
If you're renting out your house for a quick weekend flip, Southoldās watching š. ($)

Long Islandās Oyster Revival š¦Ŗ
Once upon a tide, Long Island oysters were everywhere, but pollution, over harvesting, and disease wiped out the wild harvest.
Fast forward to 2024: Oyster farming is booming, and Long Island is back on the half-shell map. Last year alone, local farms harvested a record-breaking 9.4 million oysters
The secret sauce? A small army of family-run farms and the mighty Long Island Oyster Growers Association (LIOGA). Founded in 2001, this tight-knit group helps farmers navigate red tape, share oyster wisdom, and push for a bolder vision:
-100 million oysters harvested by 2035
-$177 million added to the local economy
Farms like Peconic Gold, North Fork Big Oyster, Montauk Oyster Company, and Hampton Oyster Co. arenāt just selling shellfish. Theyāre cleaning the bays, reviving marine life, and doing it all with zero feed, water, or fertilizer. Just sunlight, tides, and a lot of love.
Fun fact: One oyster filters 50 gallons of water a day. Thatās some next-level Brita energy.

When Celebration Meets Activism š
Greenportās second annual Juneteenth celebration wasnāt just a vibe, it was a movement. Led by a crew of incredible teens, the dayās theme āHaving Their Say: What Freedom, Equality, and Justice Means to Themā put young voices front and center.
Shoutout to Greenport Highās Faith Welch, whoās a Princeton Prize winner and organizer of the national youth chapter of Coming to the Table. She didnāt just help plan the day, she stood tall in front of her community and shared a story of racial profiling.
But make no mistake, this day was also full of joy.
There were Afro-Brazilian drummers, dancers from Jacksonās Dance, spoken word, and a spine-tingling rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing by Juilliard cellist Jon Luc Jobson.
The North Fork Arts Center also unveiled a community quilt stitched with 70 stories.
