Farm Boost for New Growers 🌱
Beginning farmers on the East End have a new funding window to work with, as New York State announced $1.7 million in grants for newer farm operations.
The Beginning Farmer Grant Program is open to growers with 10 years or less of experience running a farm in New York. Funding can help cover the big ticket stuff that tends to make farming especially expensive at the start: land, equipment, livestock, farm buildings, training and marketing.
Grants range from $5,000 to $200,000 and require a 5% match. Applications are open through June 14 through the New York Farm Viability Institute. ($)

Energy and Housing ⚡️🏠
Southold Town is teeing up a pair of public hearings on April 21, tackling two issues that have been simmering for a while now: battery storage projects and accessory apartments.
BESS Moratorium Extension
The Town Board is considering extending its pause on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which has been in place since 2023 following strong community pushback over a proposed lithium-ion battery facility on Oregon Road in Cutchogue.
With Southold’s broader zoning overhaul still in progress, the BESS Task Force needs more time to review state guidelines and figure out how everything fits together.
The current moratorium is set to expire April 22, so this hearing will determine whether that pause continues.
ADU Code Changes
On the housing side, the town is looking at modest tweaks to its accessory dwelling unit (ADU) rules, changes that could quietly open the door to more local housing options.
The proposal would:
Allow ADUs to be built as detached structures, not just within existing homes
Remove older language requiring apartments to be in “permanently existing” dwellings
Clarify what types of accessory buildings (garages, barns, etc.) can be converted
There are still guardrails in place: applicants would continue to go through zoning review and need special approvals. ($)
