The Fireboat Is Back 🚢
A piece of New York City history is docked back on the Greenport waterfront. The retired FDNY fireboat “Fire Fighter,” first launched in 1938, has returned to Mitchell Marina for tours after spending several years at Mystic Seaport Museum.
The boat itself has seen more history than most museums. It responded to the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, supplied water to Ground Zero for weeks after the towers collapsed, helped rescue passengers during the “Miracle on the Hudson,” and once battled one of the largest ship fires in history.
These days, the nonprofit run vessel operates as a floating museum offering free guided tours on weekends, complete with trips through the engine room and stories from volunteers who know the boat inside and out. ($)

Seafood Trail 🐟
Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Marine Program just launched the Long Island Seafood Cuisine Trail, a new guide spotlighting restaurants, oyster bars, and fish markets serving locally harvested seafood across both the North and South Shores.
The app breaks things into two routes: one stretching from Bay Shore to Montauk, and another running from Northport all the way to Greenport. Each stop includes maps, business info, website links, and even a check in feature for tracking your seafood tour progress.
The project is part of New York State’s Blue Food Transformation initiative, which aims to support local marine agriculture and reconnect people with seafood harvested right here on Long Island.

Champion of Diversity 🌎
Southold’s May Town Board meeting turned into a well-earned celebration for Sonia Spar, who was officially recognized as the 2026 Champion of Diversity for Suffolk County’s First Legislative District.
County Legislator Greg Doroski honored Spar for years of work connecting communities across the East End, from helping multilingual residents navigate local government services to improving access to healthcare and civic engagement.
A longtime Southold resident originally from Colombia, Spar has served as the town’s Spanish Speaking Community Service Liaison since 2023, helping bridge communication gaps between residents and local government. But her involvement stretches far beyond Town Hall.

The Osprey Comeback Story 🦅
Every spring, ospreys return to nests perched above bays, marshes, utility poles, vineyards, baseball fields, and pretty much anywhere with a decent waterfront view. And while they’ve become one of the East End’s most recognizable sights, their story almost ended decades ago.
Once nearly wiped out by DDT related population collapse in the 1960s and ‘70s, ospreys have staged one of the biggest wildlife recoveries in the country. Today, they thrive across eastern Long Island thanks to decades of conservation work, nesting platforms, and a surprisingly passionate network of local birders, environmental groups, and residents who track their annual return dates like unofficial holidays.
They’re incredibly intense hunters. Ospreys can dive at speeds up to 50 mph, snatch fish using double jointed toes with spiny pads, and aggressively defend their nests from anything that gets too close, including geese, egrets, and occasionally humans with cameras who wandered a little too near.
Experts say the birds are actually an important environmental indicator. Healthy osprey populations often signal healthier waterways and stronger fish populations.
