The Lowdown

Farm Plan Still Ruffles Feathers 🐓

The chickens may be gone, but the neighborhood debate is still very much alive.

Grant Callahan has replaced plans for a controversial 6,000 hen operation on his 16 acre Southold property with an organic fruit and vegetable farm. The new proposal includes a 2,100 square foot storage barn near Jasmine Lane, and that barn is now the sticking point.

Callahan says the location allows the farm to connect to water from Jasmine Lane using a one inch residential line. Neighbors say if the building is just storing tractors, fencing and tools, there’s no reason it needs to sit so close to their homes. ($)

The Paper House ✉️

A stationery shop in Southold turned out to be a pretty good place to start a story about the things people never got the chance to say.

Author Barbara Josselsohn found the inspiration for her 10th novel, The Paper House, inside Arni Paperie. Its shelves of stationery, journals and pens got her imagining a shop where people could write letters to loved ones they had lost, or anyone they never properly got to say goodbye to.

That idea became The Paper House, a story spanning two timelines and following Kayla, who inherits a mysterious stationery shop from her great aunt Tilly. There are family secrets, old letters, a World War II backstory and even some suspicious stains discovered in the attic.

Josselsohn will be at Arni Paperie on Oct. 11 from 2–4 PM for a free book signing and meet the author event, followed by a letter-writing workshop around 3 PM.

Helen Wright Prince Award 🏆

For the past decade, Rev. Natalie Wimberly’s congregation has extended well beyond the pews at Clinton Memorial AME Zion Church.

On Thursday, the longtime Greenport pastor will receive Southold Town’s Helen Wright Prince Award, recognizing her work educating, advocating for and bringing together people across the North Fork.

Wimberly has become a leading local voice for social justice, helping co-found the North Fork chapter of Coming to the Table, an organization focused on racial reconciliation and healing. She and Clinton Memorial have also helped organize Greenport’s Juneteenth celebration and parade for the past three years.

Bootlegging Days 🥃

Long before the North Fork became known for producing alcohol legally, locals were apparently pretty good at moving it illegally.

During Prohibition, the area’s coastline, harbors and experienced mariners made it prime territory for rum-running. Greenport became part of a supply chain stretching from the Caribbean to New York City, while locals unloaded boats, stored liquor and operated speakeasies.

The Naugles family used an inclined railway on their farm to haul contraband alcohol ashore, while family member Stanley Naugles reportedly piloted a biplane used by the bootleggers.

And this wasn’t exactly a side hustle for the region. A historic survey of Greenport found rum-running generated considerable wealth during the 1920s and helped push local unemployment close to zero.

Animal of The Week

Meet Stanley. He has the look of a tiny jungle cat and the personality of a younger brother who knows exactly how charming he is. With his bright green eyes and gorgeous brown jaguar like coat, this confident big boy likes to keep an eye on everything happening around the house, right up until he decides your lap is where he belongs.

Stanley is a watch cat, comedian, and professional snuggler. He’ll run right up to his people, climb onto their chest for attention, and happily soak up behind the ear scratches, chin rubs, kisses, and all the cuddles he can get. He even enjoys being held like a baby. And like any good younger brother, he has a mischievous side too, sometimes sweet and cuddly, sometimes playfully antagonizing, but always entertaining.

Stanley would do wonderfully in a home with children or other cats and is ready to bring his big personality along with him. If you’ve been looking for a cat who can make you laugh one minute and curl up against you the next, Stanley might be your guy.
