The Lowdown

Bring Back the Night 🌌

Remember when you could see the Milky Way from your backyard? So does Marina DeLuca. But thanks to more folks living on the North Fork year-round (and keeping every light on all night), our once-dark skies are looking a little... orange.

Marina and the North Fork Dark Skies Coalition are on a mission to bring the stars back. Light pollution isn’t just a buzzkill for stargazers—it messes with wildlife, wrecks your sleep, and even links to mental health issues. The fix? Way easier than you’d think. Use warmer bulbs. Add a timer. Flip the switch off when you’re not outside.

It’s one of the last places on Long Island where you can still see a sky full of stars. Let’s keep it that way.

Not Just Popcorn and Previews šŸ©°

When the North Fork Arts Center opened its doors last year, they skipped the movie trailers and went straight for pointe shoes. That’s right, ballet took center stage. And now, the Brooklyn Ballet is back in Greenport for a three-week residency that ends with three performances May 17–18.

While they’re here, the dancers are leading workshops at Greenport School and Peconic Community School, giving local kids a firsthand look at how art moves—literally. NFAC’s also cooking up a full summer lineup of youth classes, from improv to illustration, all in the name of building a creative community.

šŸŽŸļø Evening show: May 17 at 7 PM + Sunday matinee May 18 at 2 PM ($50)

Candles That Light the Way šŸ•Æ

Every spring, Congregation Tifereth Israel in Greenport does something quietly powerful: they hand out yellow candles, each one bearing the name of a child lost in the Holocaust. They're free, but the donations they inspire? Those send Greenport High School students on a journey they won’t forget.

Now in its third year, the initiative funds a field trip to the Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove. Before the visit, students join a Zoom remembrance service. Afterward, they reflect on what they learned, connecting the past to the present in ways a textbook never could. ($)
