Looking for Bars 📶

Southold Town is looking to take a more hands on approach to one of the North Fork’s most persistent annoyances: cell service that seems to disappear exactly when it’s needed.

Town officials are considering a large town owned property between Boisseau and Youngs avenues, south of Route 48, as a potential site for a new cell tower. Nothing has been selected or approved yet, but Councilwoman Jill Doherty said the parcel could have enough room for a tower while still leaving space for future recreation, housing or other uses.

The conversation follows Southold’s newly updated wireless code, adopted in June, which puts town-owned properties among the preferred locations for new towers. And there’s certainly demand: a townwide survey last summer found nearly half of 773 respondents were getting just one bar of service at home.

Officials also discussed the ongoing rewrite of community housing regulations, with a draft expected around December or January. ($)

Butterfly Effect Spreads Its Wings 🦋

The Butterfly Effect Project is spreading its wings a little farther east, with Greenport set to become home to the organization’s first North Fork chapter.

The Riverhead based nonprofit plans to launch the chapter in October at the North Fork Arts Center. Organizers expect as many as 25 local kids to participate and are currently looking for at least two ambassadors and several volunteers to help get things off the ground.

Its programs focus on things kids could probably use more of everywhere: confidence, healthy relationships, self care, critical thinking and having a safe place to connect. ($)

Foodie Friday 🍽

Recently, we introduced a new Foodie Friday tradition: letting you tell us what we should be eating.

And after Jodi kicked things off with the bolognese at Touch of Venice, another reader has stepped up to make sure we're properly fed.

This week's reader recommendation comes from Maureen Roslak, who has a pretty convincing case for what we should all be ordering next.

🥞 Maureen's Pick: The Hot Cake at Bruce & Son

There are people who try something new every time they go out to eat.

When it comes to Bruce & Son, Maureen is not one of those people.

At Bruce & Son, there's plenty on the menu she loves. She describes the food as inventive, delightful, healthy and incredibly well thought out. But no matter how tempting everything else looks, she keeps finding her way back to the same thing:

The hot cake.

Part of the appeal is that it's always changing. Different flavor combinations come and go, but, each version somehow manages to rival, and sometimes outdo, the one before it.

It's also not your typical stack of pancakes drowning under a lake of butter and maple syrup. The hot cake is topped with things like seeds and dried fruit, giving it that rare ability to feel a little indulgent without requiring an immediate nap afterward.

But perhaps the strongest endorsement came after Maureen tried it for the first time.

"I declared that if I could never eat another meal again, except the hot cake, I would be happy."

That's commitment.

These days, her strategy at Bruce & Son is pretty simple: order the hot cake and steal bites of everything else from whoever happens to be dining with her.

And she has one piece of advice for anyone who hasn't tried it yet:

"Seriously, if you haven't had it, you need to go try one."

We don't think Maureen could have made her feelings much clearer.
