Pipeline Plan Takes a Turn 💧

The proposed North Fork Pipeline is changing course.

The Suffolk County Water Authority announced Friday that its controversial pipeline would no longer run along Sound Avenue. Instead, the new plan routes the line down Main Road, trimming about a mile off the project and cutting the expected completion date from 2030 to 2028.

The updated route would stretch roughly 7.5 miles from Flanders to a connection point near Aldrich Lane in Southold, staying entirely on state and county roads. SCWA says the change will reduce traffic and environmental impacts while avoiding busy summer and fall construction.

The project has been a lightning rod since it was first proposed, with Riverhead officials opposing multiple routes and Southold residents raising concerns about future development, water sources, and environmental impacts. Those debates aren't going away just because the map changed.

Town Hall Is Back in Business 🏛️

Five months after a burst pipe flooded Southold Town Hall, the Town Board is finally heading home.

Beginning Tuesday, July 28, board work sessions and regular meetings will once again be held at Town Hall after more than $141,000 in repairs covered by insurance. Town officials say departments quickly adapted during the disruption, keeping services running while meetings and court proceedings temporarily relocated.

The restoration included a new ceiling, carpet, paint, repaired audio system, replacement of the damaged pipe, and ongoing work in the basement where water reached the records vault. ($)

Tick Borne Allergy 🕷️

Suffolk County has an unwanted distinction: more suspected cases of alpha-gal syndrome than any other county in America.

Between 2017 and 2022, Suffolk recorded 3,746 suspected cases of the tick borne meat allergy, accounting for about 4% of all suspected cases nationwide. Experts say it's the result of an unfortunate combination: aggressive lone star ticks, a booming deer population, and lots of people living right alongside both.

Unlike most food allergies, alpha-gal reactions often don't show up until hours after eating beef, pork, lamb, or other mammal based products, sometimes waking people up in the middle of the night with hives, stomach pain, or worse.

Researchers say the East End has long been a hotspot, but the ticks are steadily spreading west. They're also replacing the deer tick in many areas, meaning cases of alpha-gal could continue climbing in the years ahead.
