The Lowdown

Maizeat at The Shoals Dockside šŸ½ļø

Alert the group chat: Chef Cheo Avila is officially taking over your North Fork weekend plans. Starting Memorial Day Weekend, he’s rolling out Maizeat, a Latin-Asian fusion food truck parked right at The Shoals Dockside in Southold. Translation: waterfront eats with dumplings, ceviche, empanadas, and a serious amount of flavor.

If Cheo’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the genius behind Kontiki and the Venezuelan-inspired Maize. He’s back from a culinary deep dive in Japan and now blending all that global inspo with hyper-local ingredients.

Here’s the vibe:
🌊 Bay breezes + Adirondack chairs
šŸŽ¶ Live music every Saturday, 2–5 PM
šŸø Crafty cocktails + local beer + photogenic spritzes
šŸ½ļø Street food-style small bites that taste like a vacation

Maizeat will be open Thursday–Sunday (and holiday Mondays) from 12-6 PM.

Mattituck-Laurel Library Glow-Up? šŸ“š

Mattituck and Laurel folks, mark your calendars: Tuesday, June 17 is your chance to decide the future of your local library.

After 25 years of holding it down without a major renovation, the Mattituck-Laurel Library is looking for a $5.5 million bond to bring the building into 2025 and beyond. Think less leaky roof, more community space.

Here’s what’s on the blueprint:
āž• A new second floor (2,142 sq ft of possibilities)
šŸ‘¾ A teen zone with a legit makerspace
šŸ“– A revamped children’s area
šŸ–¼ļø Art gallery + more public meeting rooms
♿ An entrance that’s actually accessible

Also, they're moving the director’s office so it stops hogging prime real estate. Respectfully. Library director Shauna Scholl says this is about giving the community what it actually needs, whether that’s a place to gather, create, or just chill in the AC with a good book. ($)

Greenport’s Throwing a Thank-You Party šŸŽ‰

Hey Greenport, got plans for May 21? Your village workers do, and for once, it’s not fixing sidewalks or hanging wreaths in Mitchell Park. It’s Village Employee Appreciation Day, and it’s their time to shine.

The Greenport BID is hosting the very first one, and it’s basically a love letter to the folks who keep the place running while the rest of us are sipping iced lattes and Instagramming sunsets.

Here’s what’s on the gratitude menu:
🄪 Lunch at the Greenport Fire Department: sandwiches, chips, and sweets from Blue Duck Bakery.
šŸ• Pizza party at 1943 Pizza, because carbs = love.
šŸ» Complimentary drinks at Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., because of course.

This celebration was dreamt up by BID prez Nancy Kouris, with a stellar crew of local business leaders backing her, Ryan Farrel (American Beech), Linda Kessler (Kessie), Rich Vandenburgh (Greenport Harbor Brewing), and Colin Ratsey (Ratsey Construction).

And the best part? Next year, they’re hoping to level up with a bash at 5th Street Park—so the people who maintain the playgrounds can finally just play.
