A Garden for the Birds 🐦

On a picture-perfect October afternoon, the North Fork Audubon Society snipped a ribbon of Virginia creeper and officially opened the ā€œBerries for Birdsā€ garden, a new native habitat at Inlet Pond County Park honoring Rick Kedenburg, the late board member, naturalist, and all-around bird whisperer.

Kedenburg, who passed away in 2023, left a generous gift that funded the project. It’s designed to feed migratory and overwintering birds through the leaner months, think of it as a pit stop buffet for warblers, orioles, and chickadees.

Landscape designer Robin Simmen and a team of volunteers spent three years clearing invasives, remediating soil, and fencing off the plot, complete with a ā€œpsychologicalā€ double fence that even the boldest deer won’t jump. Two-thirds of the plants came through a grant from Rewild North Fork.

Palate Pleaser Award šŸ†

Big news from the kitchen at Peconic Landing, Executive Chef JP Hascoat just took home the national Palate Pleaser Award from Senior Housing News’ DISHED Dining Innovation Awards!

The honor recognizes chefs who turn senior living dining into something way beyond ā€œmeatloaf Monday,ā€ and JP’s doing exactly that. With bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and a knack for presentation, he’s been delighting diners since Peconic Landing opened back in 2002.

A little backstory: JP’s love of cooking started early. His father ran La Gazelle, from 1975 to 1995. JP went on to work at the Waldorf Astoria, Doral Hotels, and even opened his own spot, Journey’s Inn, before finding his home at Peconic Landing.

President & CEO Bob Syron says JP has ā€œset the benchmark for dining in senior livingā€.

Residents agree. Culinary Committee chair Amy Wester says JP ā€œlistens to members, welcomes feedback, and accommodates everyone, from vegans to holiday traditionalists.ā€

Congrats JP!

Dog of The Week

Meet Basil šŸ¾

Meet Basil he’s a stunning Husky mix with the kind of soulful eyes that stop you in your tracks. He’s been waiting a long time for his happy ending, and he’s hoping it’s you.

This handsome Husky has the looks and the love to match. He’s a little shy when you first meet him, but give him a minute (and maybe a treat or two), and he’ll lean right in for snuggles. Once you’re in his circle, you’re his person for life.

He’s dog social, cat-friendly, and basically everyone’s favorite once he warms up. Shelter life just isn’t his vibe, (too loud, too hectic). What Basil really wants is a quiet home, a comfy couch, and someone patient enough to help him relax and shine.

If you’ve got room for a loyal, loving sidekick with a gentle soul, Basil’s your guy. Come meet him at the 324 Church Lane location from 10-3 PM.

Trivia Time 🧠

Your brain deserves more than scrolling and skimming. Each week we’ll hit you with one question designed to make you pause, scratch your head, and maybe argue with whoever’s sitting next to you. Think of it as a quick mental pit stop: a chance to flex your random knowledge, test your memory, or finally use that obscure fact you learned in 7th grade.

Last Week’s Results

Last week we asked: Which U.S. city loves pierogis so much that its Major League Baseball team hosts a ā€œPierogi Raceā€ at every home game?

Answer: Pittsburgh

Only 36% got it right, proving that pierogi knowledge isn’t exactly widespread.

Local Spotlight

North Fork Heads to NYC 🐟

On Wednesday, November 5, the James Beard Foundation is reeling in something special at Pier 57: North Fork Catch: A Sensational Seafood Dinner, featuring the team behind Minnow at the Galley Ho in New Suffolk.

Founded by restaurateur and lifelong waterwoman Andrea Tese. Her restaurant is all about the bay-to-plate life, featuring fish caught using traditional pound traps, an Indigenous, no-bycatch method that keeps local waters healthy and the seafood ridiculously fresh.

Chef Anna Paola Mannucci will take it from there, crafting a Mediterranean-inspired menu using fish pulled straight from Minnow’s own trap.

Expect a cocktail reception with passed bites, a multi-course dinner with perfectly paired wines, and a chef Q&A.
