The Lowdown
Communication Strategy 🗣️
Southold Town officials are asking residents a simple but important question: how do you actually stay informed?
The Town Board’s Communications Task Force has launched a new survey aimed at understanding where locals get their news, whether that’s the town website, social media, newspapers, radio, or elsewhere (like North Fork Buzz).
Councilwoman Alexa Suess said the goal is to improve how the town communicates by meeting people where they already are. While the town website will remain the primary hub, officials want clearer insight into real world habits, not assumptions.

Bake Sale With a Message 🍪
A community bake sale with a purpose is coming to Greenport this weekend, and it’s about more than just something sweet.
“Ice Cakes Not People” hosted by Slow Food East End, will take place Saturday, March 28 at Hold Fast Stay True Studios. The event is part of a nationwide effort showing support for immigrant communities, with proceeds benefiting OLA of Eastern Long Island.
Expect a table full of locally made goods: cakes, cookies, breads, and savory bites, all donated by North Fork bakers and food businesses.
Organizers are also opening the door to home bakers and volunteers, keeping the barrier to entry low and the community involvement high. ($)

One Room Schoolhouses 🏫
Once upon a time, one room schoolhouses were everywhere on Long Island. Now, almost all of them are gone.
Of the roughly 15 historic schoolhouses still preserved and open to the public across Long Island, six are right here on the North Fork, the highest concentration anywhere, according to architectural historian Zachary Studenroth.
The reason mostly comes down to timing and development. In places like Nassau County and western Suffolk, suburban growth wiped out many of these structures, replacing them with larger schools and new housing. Out east, things moved slower, and that gave people time to realize these buildings were worth saving.
Groups like the Southold Historical Museum stepped in before these buildings disappeared entirely, holding onto pieces of early community life that might’ve otherwise been lost.

More Than a Museum 🚜
If you’ve ever passed Hallockville Museum Farm and thought “I should stop there someday,” this might be your sign. Set on 28 acres, the site traces back to a Hallock family homestead from around 1765.
Under executive director Heather Johnson, Hallockville has leaned into being both a living museum and an active community space. That means everything from craft workshops and beekeeping programs to birdwatching, exhibits, and a community garden, plus a steady lineup of events that draw a crowd.
There’s also a quieter side to explore. The Sustainability Trail walks visitors through how early farms operated with almost no waste, a practical look at how older methods still resonate today.

Local Spotlight
Wine Country Brunch 🍷
Long Island Wine Country is rolling out its Blanc and Franc Brunch Series, a new Sunday lineup in partnership with Share & Pair Sundays that leans all the way into two of the region’s standouts: Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
Running April through June, this isn’t your standard eggs and a mimosa situation. Each brunch is built around seasonal menus thoughtfully paired with local wines, giving you a reason to slow down, stay a while, and maybe order that second glass without overthinking it.
If your Sundays could use a little structure or just a better excuse to open a bottle before noon, this is a pretty good place to start.
