Third Street Court Upgrade, A Fresh Look, Blue-Green Algae Returns

Together With
Good Morning, North Fork! America turns 250 this Saturday, and The Buzz team plans to celebrate the occasion the traditional way: grilling, eating too much, spending time outside, and enjoying the fireworks. To get a head start on the festivities, we're giving ourselves Friday off, which means there will be no newsletter this Friday.
In today’s North Fork Buzz:

Summer Tastes Better at Little Fish 🌅
There are certain foods that just taste better by the water.
Maybe it's the salt air. Maybe it's the extra hour of daylight. Or maybe it's the fact that once summer starts creeping in, nobody wants to be anywhere else.
At Little Fish, beachside season is fully on.
The outdoor tables are back in rhythm, live music drifts through the evening air, and the menu is made for long evenings by the Beach.
Start with local oysters topped with charred pineapple relish. Add an order of day boat catch ceviche with homemade tortilla chips. Then try not to fight over the last spicy tuna tartare taquito.
Add a cold drink, a few friends, and a sunset over the water, and you've got yourself a picture perfect day.
Summer hours have officially arrived:
• Lunch 7 Days a Week (12–3 PM)
• Dinner 7 Days a Week (5–9 PM)
• Friday & Saturday Dinner Extended Until 10 PM
More sunsets. More beach dinners. More reasons to grab a table outside.
Live music this week:
- Wednesday: The Libations 6-9 PM
- Friday: Bruce MacDonald 6-9 PM
- Saturday: Gene Casey 6-9 PM
Reservations are live at littlefishnofo.com or by calling (631) 765-8756
See you at the beach!

Third Street Court Upgrade 🏀
The future of the Third Street basketball courts is officially moving forward. The Greenport Village Board voted to approve a privately funded project that will upgrade the longtime community courts after weeks of public discussion.
The proposal, led by residents Tod Hart and Collin Ratsey, has grown significantly since it was first presented in May. What was initially estimated at around $25,000 is now expected to cost roughly $42,500.
The upgrades go well beyond a fresh coat of paint. Plans include larger backboards, new noise reducing rims, heavy duty nets, protective pole padding, and even an eight foot hoop designed for younger players. Nearly 40 trees donated by the Greenport Tree Committee will also be planted around the courts to help improve the space. ($)

A Fresh Look ☕️
If you've ever driven past Panoramica in Peconic and wondered what exactly was going on inside, you're not alone.
The retro futuristic coffee and candy shop recently received a $5,000 small business grant through the Long Island Association's L.O.C.A.L. program.
The grant will help fund a hand painted exterior sign inspired by one that hung on the building back in the 1940s, giving the storefront a fresh look while honoring its history.
Panoramica was selected after completing an application, video submission, and interview process. The grant program, now in its third year, has awarded a total of $500,000 to 90 Long Island businesses.

Blue-Green Algae Returns ⚠️
Thinking about taking a dip or letting the dog cool off in Laurel Lake or Merritts Pond? Suffolk County health officials say that's a bad idea right now.
New harmful cyanobacteria blooms, better known as blue-green algae, have been confirmed in both Laurel Lake and Merritts Pond. Residents are being urged to avoid all recreational activities in and around the affected waters and to keep children and pets away.
While blue-green algae naturally exists in many waterways, the right mix of sunlight, warm temperatures, and nutrients can cause it to rapidly multiply into potentially hazardous blooms. ($)

Expanding Its Animal Family 🐟
If it's been a while since your last trip to the Long Island Aquarium, this summer might be the time to go back.
They’re rolling out a wave of new exhibits, animal encounters, and hands on experiences.
Tucked beyond the butterfly room, Coconut Beach packs an impressive collection of creatures into one tropical themed space. Visitors will find everything from axolotls and blue Everglades crayfish to coconut crabs, vampire shrimp, tokay geckos, and archerfish. Aquarium staff have spent nearly four years bringing the exhibit to life.
For those who prefer their animals a little more interactive, Shark Reef Lagoon opens with a new stingray encounter. Guests can suit up, step into the water, and feed, touch, and swim alongside six cownose rays under the guidance of aquarium educators.
The aquarium is also introducing Critter Connection, a behind the scenes style experience where visitors can meet ambassador animals up close. ($)
