Free Coffee for Winterfest ☕️

Stone Street Cafe is officially pouring in Southold.

The growing coffee brand will celebrate the grand opening of its newest North Fork location on Saturday, February 21, perfectly timed with Southold’s annual Winterfest. To mark the occasion, the café is offering complimentary coffee all day.

Founded as a roaster in 2014, Stone Street opened its flagship café on Broome Street in New York City three years later. The Southold shop marks the brand’s second café location. The team shared that the North Fork’s slower, community driven pace feels like a natural fit for the brand’s philosophy.

DEC Investigates Waterfowl Deaths 🦆

February is never easy on wildlife, but this year’s lingering snow cover is making it worse.

Local experts say food scarcity is weakening North Fork waterfowl, leaving them vulnerable to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) recently collected three Canada geese from Jamesport for testing after receiving numerous reports of sick and dead birds along Peconic Bay.

Along the shoreline off Simmons Point in Jamesport, more than 100 dead Canada geese were observed, with additional birds alive but displaying neurological symptoms: head tilting, swimming in circles, lethargy.

The NYSDEC has launched an online reporting tool for clusters of dead birds and advises residents to avoid contact with carcasses, assume deceased birds may be HPAI-positive, and use gloves, masks, and proper disposal methods if removal is necessary. ($)

All In for America’s 250th 🇺🇸

The town is gearing up for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with more than 30 events already on the calendar, and more still in the works. From parades and performances to lectures, debates, and even a colonial wedding, nearly every historic and cultural group in town is getting involved.

While many events will peak in summer, the celebrations are already underway. The Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council and Museums kicked things off with a January lecture and will host additional talks exploring Southold’s role during the Revolutionary War.

In July, the council will stage a lively loyalist versus patriot debate at the Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library. Over at the North Fork Community Theatre, the musical 1776 runs March 12–29, bringing audiences back to the room where it happened.

One of the more unique highlights: a recreation of a 1775 colonial wedding at the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church, honoring Revolutionary War soldier Gershom Terry and Elizabeth Case Terry.

The East End Seaport Museum will explore British ships in Peconic Bay with Revolution-era exhibits and rigging demonstrations, including a visit from the three-masted U.S. Coast Guard tall ship EAGLE. Meanwhile, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company is crafting a commemorative beer for the occasion. ($)

Local Spotlight

Wedding Giveback 🇺🇸

Some traditions just feel right. For the 14th year, Brecknock Hall, in partnership with Peconic Landing, is opening applications for its Veterans Day Wedding Giveback, a community powered thank you to the men and women who have served. Each year, one military couple is gifted a dream wedding at the historic hall, made possible by a long list of local wedding pros who donate their time and talent.

The 2026 celebration will take place on Sunday of Veterans Day Weekend (11/8/2026), and applications are open now through April 1, 2026. If at least one partner has served or is currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, this is one of those rare opportunities that feels as meaningful as it is magical.

Spread the word, and if you know a couple who deserves this kind of spotlight, now’s the time.
