The Lowdown
Southold Town wants to hear from you. There’s a countywide Hazard Mitigation Plan survey open right now, and officials are encouraging residents to fill it out before Feb. 20.
Why? Because having an updated plan in place helps make the town eligible for FEMA funding, the dollars that can go toward infrastructure fixes, recovery projects and steps that help lessen the blow of the next big thing Mother Nature throws our way.
Supervisor Al Krupski said emergency management is something the town spends a lot of time on, and he tipped his cap to Suffolk County for helping Southold navigate last November’s cyberattack. The broader plan looks at risks tied to natural hazards and maps out long-term strategies aimed at making the community stronger and more resilient. ($)

Northeast Stage Spring Productions 🎭
This spring, Northeast Stage is returning to its roots with a lineup built around innovative, rarely produced work, and a strong focus on women’s voices.
Now helmed by members of Corchaug Rep, the company will present three plays by Pulitzer Prize winning writer Susan Glaspell in mid-April. Together, the works explore the theme of: what can happen when women are overlooked or dismissed.
The trio includes Trifles, a murder mystery in which the male investigators fail to notice crucial details understood by the women around them; Suppressed Desires, a comedy satirizing the early fascination with psychoanalysis, and The Outside, a more poetic piece about isolation and the impossibility of fully withdrawing from the world.
In keeping with the focus of the material, each production will be directed by a woman. Auditions are scheduled for Feb. 14 and 15 at the Cutchogue New Suffolk Library. The directors are casting 13 roles across the three plays, and some actors may take on more than one part.
Performances will run April 17–26 at Holy Trinity Church.

Crossword Tournament ✏️
Southold Free Library is launching its first ever East End Crossword Tournament on Saturday, March 14.
The event is being cooked up by library staff along with Sean Galligan, the trivia hosting brain behind Greenport Harbor Brewing Company.
But before visions of sweat and stopwatches scare you off, relax. Organizers say this day is built for fun, not intimidation.
Solvers will tackle mini, midi and full size crosswords. Then, in the grand finale, the top three competitors will head upstairs and complete a 15-by-15 on a whiteboard easel in front of a crowd, with the action streamed online.
Yes, glory awaits.
Prizes include T-shirts, library swag and crossword books. The winner scores a custom engraved mechanical pencil and a photo on display at the library. ($)

Animal of The Week
Meet Banjo, this handsome young guy, rocking a sharp little black goatee and a set of bright green eyes that could stop traffic, is pure charm from the jump. Sit down with him and the purring starts immediately. Not subtle. Not occasional. We’re talking enthusiastic, surround sound, engine revving levels of happy.
Banjo’s got that sleek, athletic build and moves like he knows he looks good, but he’s not just here to model. He wants in on the action. Toys? Yes please. Attention? Absolutely. Hanging right next to you while running his built-in motor at full volume? That’s the dream.
If your home could use a little extra love, entertainment, and the constant reminder that you are adored, Banjo is ready to clock in.
Fair warning: once you meet him, you’re not leaving without thinking about him.

Trivia Time 🧠
Your brain deserves more than scrolling and skimming. Each week we’ll hit you with one question designed to make you pause, scratch your head, and maybe argue with whoever’s sitting next to you. Think of it as a quick mental pit stop: a chance to flex your random knowledge, test your memory, or finally use that obscure fact you learned in 7th grade.

Great Backyard Bird Count 🐦
The 29th annual Great Backyard Bird Count takes place at Inlet Pond County Park on Sunday, February 15 at 1 PM, turning a winter afternoon into a celebration of feathers, fresh air, and the simple joy of spotting something with wings. The free program is designed for families, beginners, and anyone who’s ever said, “Wait, what bird is that?”
Hosted locally with support from the Town of Southold and North Fork Audubon Society, the event keeps things welcoming and hands-on. Guided bird walks through the park, easy tips for identifying species, crafts for the younger naturalists, and even a puppet show built around the count.
Yes, there will be refreshments. Birding runs better on snacks.
