Duck, Duck, Rebuild š¦
Things got real quacky for Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue this January when a nasty strain of avian flu wiped out their entire flockāyep, all 100,000 ducks. But owner Doug Corwin isnāt letting that be the end of the road.
Heās now raising two flocks of ducklings (cutest comeback story ever?) with hopes theyāll reach maturity by late summer. These little guys arenāt just adorableātheyāre the last living link to the farmās one-of-a-kind genetics. Talk about pressure.
Meanwhile, the farm is under serious quarantine. Weāre talking wet disinfection, dry fumigation, and enough biosecurity to make a sci-fi lab jealous. Even though they're cleared for retesting, Dougās playing it safe and waiting until April 28.
Dougās also calling for better biosecurity and vaccines, saying small farms like his canāt afford another all-ducks-on-deck disaster.
This place isnāt just another farmāitās Long Islandās last commercial duck operation and itās been in Dougās family since 1908. If resilience had a mascot, itād probably be one of those six-week-old ducklings waddling toward a comeback. ($)
