Searching for a Deer Solution 🦌

Thirteen years after Southold residents packed a public forum over deer, ticks and road safety, the town is still wrestling with much of the same problem.

A new petition is calling for immediate action on deer overpopulation, including the possible use of 4 poster feeding stations. The devices lure deer with corn, then coat their heads and necks with tick killing permethrin as they eat.

But Dr. John Rasweiler of Southold’s deer management task force told the Town Board that the stations come with plenty of baggage. They are expensive, difficult to place, attract other wildlife and may actually help deer gain weight and reproduce more frequently.

Rasweiler argued that a controlled deer cull remains the only affordable, workable long term solution. Councilwoman Jill Doherty agreed, while Councilwoman Alexa Seuss said recreational hunting and possible bow hunting mentorship programs should remain part of the strategy.

Encanto’s Crepes 🥞

When Dan’s White Party returns on Saturday, Aug. 29, Encanto Crepes & Cafe will bring a taste of Colombia, folded neatly into a French classic.

Owner Gustavo Acero built Encanto around the idea that Colombian heritage, North Fork ingredients and global inspiration can all share the same plate. The menu starts with the traditional crepe, then adds local produce and flavors drawn from Acero’s roots.

For Acero, farm to table cooking is about more than freshness. Buying from nearby farms and producers keeps support circulating through the same community that supports the restaurant.

Preserving Shelter Island’s Memory 🏛️

The Shelter Island Historical Society is now officially the Shelter Island History Museum, a change that reflects how the century old organization has grown well beyond preserving old documents behind glass.

Based inside the 1743 Havens House, the museum added a modern wing in 2019. But executive director Nanette Lawrenson says the real work happens through the stories shared inside it.

That includes the current Witness the American Revolution exhibition, the weekly Havens Farmers Market, historical house tours, performances, school partnerships and the Living History Project, which has recorded roughly 35 interviews with Shelter Islanders since 2017.

Voters Say Yes to Preserving History 👍

Cutchogue and New Suffolk voters overwhelmingly approved a new $60,000 annual tax levy to support the community’s historical museums and aging buildings.

The final tally wasn’t particularly suspenseful: 102 voted yes, while just 12 voted no.

The levy will cost the average taxable property about $21.52 per year. It will continue annually unless voters later decide to change or eliminate it.

The Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council maintains six museum buildings, along with the Cutchogue Old Burying Ground. Four of those buildings need new roofs, including the Old Schoolhouse, where replacement work is scheduled to begin in October.

The funding will also help cover routine maintenance as volunteer labor becomes harder to find and the council increasingly relies on paid contractors. ($)
