The Lowdown
A New Chapter is Brewing ☕️
After five years as a beloved Einstein Square gathering spot, Southold General is turning the page and welcoming new management. Enter Stone Street Coffee, the Brooklyn based roaster bringing small batch coffee and an elevated café experience to the North Fork.
The goal? Enhance what locals already love while keeping the heart and history intact, honoring the spot where Albert Einstein once exchanged ideas, and where the community has been doing the same ever since.

The Winter Hangout 🍔
The Boathouse at Silver Sands, is a cozy waterfront hangout that quietly opened last fall and somehow cracked the code on winter on the North Fork. With salvaged nautical finds, communal tables, old movies projected on a sail, and a bar pulled straight from Greenport history, the space feels less like a restaurant and more like a living room.
Owned by Alex Perros and led in the kitchen by chef Finn O’Hara, The Boathouse leans into hospitality over hype, keeping familiar faces around all year and giving locals a reason to leave the house in January.
The menu is fun: crispy snacks, sandwiches, fresh local seafood, on-site oysters, pizza nights, and the undeniable crowd favorite, McCall’s burger.

Polar Plunge 🌊
The North Fork Polar Bears are gearing up to make another splash at their fourth annual Polar Bear Plunge on Jan. 25 at Veterans Beach in Mattituck, and once again, it’s about so much more than a quick dip. What started as a small, slightly wild idea has grown into a powerful winter tradition.
Founded by Patricia Garcia-Gomez and Dafydd Snowdon-Jones, the group has swelled from just six swimmers to more than 150 locals who plunge year-round. This year, organizers expect up to 300 plungers and a crowd of bundled-up cheerleaders, all helping raise funds for CAST and the Back to the Bays Initiative. ($)
