Pipeline Showdown Update 🚰

If you thought the North Fork’s biggest flow issue was traffic on Main Road, think again. The Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) wants to run an 8.5-mile pipeline from Flanders to the Southold line, claiming it’s the key to easing pressure on wells threatened by saltwater intrusion.

The Riverhead Town Board ruled that the project isn’t exempt from local zoning review, basically telling SCWA, You still have to play by our rules. SCWA’s response? To hold its own hearings, saying it has the legal right to move forward.

Riverhead’s argument: the project cuts through town roads, messes with traffic, and offers no real benefit to locals.

SCWA’s rebuttal: this helps everyone, more clean water and relief for struggling wells.

Southold leaders say: maybe pump the brakes until a U.S. Geological Survey study on groundwater is done.

You Can Handle the Truth 🎭

The North Fork Community Theatre is serving up courtroom drama with a side of moral conflict as A Few Good Men hits the Mattituck stage.

Co-directors Stephen Ness and Julia Cappiello stepped up when the show needed leadership, and judging by early buzz, the result is electric.

Wade Karlin takes on the infamous Col. Jessup, while Alek Lewis suits up as defense attorney Daniel Kaffee, and Mary Caulfield, plays Lt. Commander Joanne Galloway.

In a twist Sorkin might actually love, several male roles have been reimagined for women, adding fresh energy to a story that’s all about truth, loyalty, and doing what’s right, even when the chain of command says otherwise.

Catch A Few Good Men at the North Fork Community Theatre, Oct. 10–26 (Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 PM, Sundays at 2:30 PM).

Mattituck Inlet Warning 🌊

If a big storm hits before dredging happens, Mattituck Inlet could be in serious trouble. That’s the message Mattituck Park District chairman Kevin Byrne shared at a packed community meeting last week.

The inlet, which connects Love Lane to the Long Island Sound, has filled with sand so badly it now needs an estimated 100,000 cubic yards removed to stay safe and navigable. For comparison, the Army Corps of Engineers is only planning to clear 6,000 cubic yards, and not until October 2026, thanks to equipment delays.

A Change.org petition pushing for large-scale dredging and restoration of Bailie Beach has been started, but the big fix requires a new Section 111 study. ($)

A Fond Farewell to The Old Field Vineyards 🍷

After decades of pouring memories along the Peconic Bay, The Old Field Vineyards will officially close its doors on November 30. The beloved Southold winery, known for its sweeping water views and historic barn is wrapping up its final season, with its property now listed as “pending.”

If you’ve ever dreamed of one last glass under those century-old trees, now’s the time. Stop by for a final tasting, glass, or bottle before the gates close for good.

Fun fact: The Old Field Vineyards had its Hollywood moment back in 2010, starring in The Romantics with Anna Paquin, Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and many others. About 100 North Fork residents even got to take part in the film as extras. Let us know if you were one of them!
