Forever Chemicals 🥕

A new study out of Stony Brook University found something unsettling in a place many locals trust most: farm stand vegetables.

Researchers tested 23 samples of carrots, lettuce, and beets purchased from North and South Fork farm stands in August 2025. Every sample contained PFAS, the so-called “forever chemicals” that linger in the environment for decades.

Scientists and environmental advocates say the findings aren’t about farming practices. The chemicals have become so widespread that they now show up in soil, water, and ultimately the food grown in it.

PFAS have been used for decades in everyday products like nonstick pans, carpets, and food packaging, and once released, they can stick around in the environment, and the human body, for years.

For environmental advocates, the study adds urgency to calls for stronger federal rules on PFAS manufacturing and disposal. ($)

Track and Field Improvements 🏃

Greenport residents didn’t hesitate when it came to improving the school’s athletic facilities.

Voters overwhelmingly approved a $1.97 million upgrade Tuesday, passing the measure 210–13 to rebuild and refresh parts of the district’s aging athletic complex.

The project will reconstruct and resurface the school’s cinder track and add new bleachers with accessible seating, along with a press box, concession stand and comfort station. Locker room ceilings will also be replaced, and a new restroom building and 30-by-30-foot metal storage structure will be constructed.

The upgrades will be paid entirely through the district’s capital reserve fund, meaning no impact on local taxes.

Superintendent Beth Doyle said the project will expand opportunities for student athletics and physical education while addressing long standing facility needs. ($)

Fire Officials Urge Changes 🚒

Southold’s fire chiefs are asking the town to rethink how it runs its fire marshal office, before more trained staff walk out the door.

At a Town Board work session Tuesday, Southold Town Fire Chief’s Council president Norman Reilly said the current system forces the town into a frustrating cycle: hire new, uncertified fire marshals, pay to train them, and then lose them to higher paying municipalities.

His suggestion? Hire a seasoned fire marshal who can immediately handle inspections and help build a stronger office from day one.

The job itself covers a lot of ground. Fire marshals are responsible for inspecting schools, churches, hospitals, restaurants, shopping centers, hotels, firehouses and other public buildings, making the need for experienced personnel even more pressing.

They’re also asking for practical upgrades, including a take-home vehicle, turnout gear and a radio connected to dispatch, so the fire marshal can respond directly to emergency scenes rather than stopping at Town Hall first.

Local Spotlight

Limerick Contest ☘️

Some people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a pint. Others celebrate with a pint and a poem.

Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. is once again inviting poets, pub philosophers, and clever wordsmiths to try their hand at the ancient Irish art of the limerick. The rules are simple: Write a five line limerick about beer using the classic AABBA rhyme scheme and send it in.

Entries can be DM’d to the brewery or emailed to [email protected], and the best submissions will earn more than just bragging rights. The winning poet will take home a Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. gift certificate.

Limericks will be read aloud during the brewery’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Peconic on Sunday, with the winner announced at 3 PM. No need to be present to win, though hearing a room full of people laugh at a beer rhyme you wrote might be worth the trip.
