The Lowdown
Brain Gains 🧠
Peconic Landing in Greenport is looking to give residents something new to exercise: their brains.
Executives from Japan’s Kumon Institute recently visited the retirement community to discuss a new cognitive wellness program designed to help older adults stay mentally sharp as they age.
The program combines simple math, reading aloud, memory games, and a high tech headband called “Thinkie” that measures brain activity.
Peconic Landing is already introducing SMARTfit, an interactive system that combines physical movement with mental challenges. Plans are also underway for a larger fitness center and a dedicated brain fitness space over the next few years.

Watching the Clock ⏱️
Southold Town Board meetings could soon come with a five minute countdown for residents who want to speak their minds.
Town officials are considering a five minute limit on public comments, hoping to give more residents a chance to be heard rather than letting a handful of speakers dominate the microphone.
Supervisor Al Krupski says he's noticed people leave meetings or drop off Zoom before getting their turn. But not everyone is sold on the idea. Some residents argue that a stopwatch shouldn't determine how long someone gets to address their local government. ($)

Sea Shanties 🎶
On Sunday, October 25, more than 30 cadets will take the stage at Horton Point Lighthouse in Southold for a free outdoor concert featuring sea shanties, folk songs, patriotic anthems, and maritime classics.
The performance runs from 1 to 2:30 PM, with the historic 1857 lighthouse and Long Island Sound providing a pretty spectacular backdrop.
The concert will also honor the late Ray Nofi, a Southold Historical Museum volunteer whose idea helped bring the performance to life.

Picasso of Plywood 🎨
One man's scrap plywood is another man's masterpiece. Just ask Southold artist Ted Thirlby.
The former contractor has spent more than a decade turning weathered, beat up plywood into works of art. His latest exhibition, “Atunements,” opens Saturday, October 24, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport.
Using reclaimed wood, geometric shapes, and shimmering iridescent paints, Thirlby transforms construction leftovers into colorful pieces inspired by nature, astronomy, and the passage of time.
Some of the wood even comes from local tree crews, who use plywood to protect lawns from heavy machinery before tossing it aside.
