Zoning Feedback Closes Friday đ¨
Southoldâs giving its zoning code a much-needed facelift for the first time in 54 years. And if youâve got thoughts on what gets built where and how, nowâs the time to speak up. Public feedback closes Friday, July 18.
So far, the Townâs held 10+ info sessions, from hamlet forums to sit-downs with farmers and environmentalists. And now? They want to hear from you.
You can review the proposed new Zoning Code and leave anonymous feedback at southoldzoningupdate.com
The Zoning Update Advisory Committee (ZUAC) just got back to work after reviewing the draft code. Theyâre deep-diving into housing, land use, and design.
Meanwhile, thereâs major buzz about building affordable housing on the old Skyway Drive-In property in Greenport West. Sewer access + no neighbors = development unicorn.
The next public ZUAC meeting is Friday, July 18 at noon at Town Hall Annex.
After the public comment period, the Town will finalize the draft and decide if an environmental review is needed. That could push the final vote to sometime in 2026.

Art on the Edge đ¨
Thereâs a new piece at Landcraft Garden in Mattituck thatâs more than just pretty, itâs a quiet, powerful warning.
Internationally renowned artist Sarah Sze has created a site-specific installation called âMarkings, Calls and Songsâ, and itâs unlike anything youâve seen. Strips of fishing line stretch between three trees, forming two glowing wings in the shape of a cross. Clipped to the lines: Torn-edge photos of sunsets, birds in flight, rippling water, little love notes to nature. It hangs above your head like a stained glass window made by a birdwatcher.
But hereâs the kicker: itâs placed right at the edge of the woods. Thatâs not an accident.
That âedgeâ is exactly where nature starts to fall apart, literally. When forests are carved up, the borders become unstable: light levels rise, temps go up, wind whips through, and invasive plants move in. Birds, bees, bugs? They lose their homes. And itâs happening all around us.

Mosquito Patrol Incoming đ
Suffolk Countyâs gearing up to treat local marshes for mosquito larvae, aka stopping the swarm before it starts. Between June 25â27, you might spot a low-flying helicopter cruising over marshes from Riverhead to Southold (and beyond), dropping granular larvicides to target the bugs before they buzz.
The good news? The products, VectoPrime FG and Altosid, are EPA and NYS approved, and officials say no precautions are needed. Theyâre safe for people, pets, and pollinators, but not so much for baby mosquitoes.
So if you see a helicopter hovering overhead, donât panic, itâs just Suffolk County doing us all a solid in the fight against itchy ankles. ($)
