The Lowdown

Southold Remembers 🇺🇸

Southold didn’t just observe Veterans Day on Tuesday morning. It paused. It breathed. It held space.

Inside the Griswold Terry Glover American Legion Hall, the meaning of service wasn’t a slogan, it was right there in the room.

Every person in that room had once raised a hand and pledged to defend the Constitution without knowing whether they’d end up fixing planes, cooking meals for hundreds, or crawling through a foxhole.

The room fell quiet for a prayer, and even quieter for the POW/MIA remembrance table the single rose, the lemon slice, the salt, the empty chair. A table full of symbols that somehow says everything words can’t.

The American Legion Auxiliary got a well-earned shoutout for keeping the post running strong. President Joan Cochran reminded everyone that war doesn’t just happen on battlefields, it happens at kitchen tables, in sleepless nights, in the worry and waiting families carry alone.

The ceremony turned straight into action. Despite snow squalls and 25 mph winds, volunteers teamed up with Long Island Cares and the local Navy JROTC to deliver “Gift of Thanks” holiday meal kits to veterans across town.

Solar Storm 🌆

Did you catch Tuesday’s jaw-dropping northern lights? (yes, those Instagram stories were real).

Tuesday night’s display came from a beefy G4 geomagnetic storm, the strongest since 2024, and if the solar tantrum keeps up, 24 states could get another light show. Even spots as far south as Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida might catch a glow.

Scientists say we’re currently being smacked by a magnetic cloud from not one, not two, but three CMEs (coronal mass ejections) that blasted off the sun earlier this week. And the most energetic one? Still on the way.

New Police Chaplain 🙏

The Town Board officially appointed Rev. Andrew Cadieux, the longtime priest from Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Mattituck, as the new chaplain for the Southold Police Department.

If his name rings a bell, it should. Father Andrew has spent more than 20 years serving police officers and firefighters from Connecticut to Brookhaven, offering prayers at ceremonies, counseling first responders after tough calls, and standing with families through funerals and grief.

Father Andrew also understands the power of that brotherhood and sisterhood firsthand. When he was hospitalized with COVID in 2020, six weeks on oxygen, members of the Blue Point Fire Department checked on his wife and kids, dropping off gift cards and support. ($)
