State of Mattituck Recap 📢

Big updates out of the State of Mattituck 2025 dinner! Parks District Commissioner Kevin Byrne celebrated the district’s financial comeback, plus some fun additions—like a new dog park and a free summer concert series (shoutout to local sponsors for making it happen).

But there’s a big issue on the water—Mattituck Inlet needs dredging to keep boating and other activities running smoothly. Southold Town Supervisor Al Krupski says help is on the way, with dredging set for this fall.

Meanwhile, School Superintendent Shawn Petretti is keeping a close eye on declining enrollment and shrinking state aid, urging the community to rally behind local schools. ($)

New ECO in Town 👮

Southold and Shelter Island have a new guardian of the great outdoors! Cutchogue native Julie Dickerson is stepping into the role of Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO), taking over from Emilio Zullo, who’s heading back to Westchester after three years on the North Fork.

Julie’s love for the environment started early—boating on Peconic Bay, ice skating on Hummels Pond, and later joining the Navy Junior ROTC. That passion led her to a degree in fisheries and wildlife sciences, and now, she’s putting it to work protecting local land and waters.

Her job? Cracking down on illegal poaching, keeping an eye on hunting and fishing activities, and investigating environmental violations. She’s thrilled to serve the community she calls home, and Zullo has no doubt she’ll do an amazing job. ($)
