2,977 Flags 🇺🇸

On Friday, Sept. 11, Jean Cochran Park in Southold will fill with 2,977 American flags, one for every person killed in the 9/11 attacks 25 years ago.

The Southold Town 9/11 Committee and local Scouts will begin placing the flags at 5 PM, with the community invited to take part. At 6 PM, local fire departments will pause for a 15 minute remembrance ceremony.

2,977 individual reminders of the lives lost that day. ($)

10,001 Chin-Ups 💪

Shelter Island’s David Brush had a very specific number written on the back of his old Guinness plaque: 10,001. On Aug. 29, he finally went after it.

Brush spent nearly 24 hours doing chin-ups, finishing with 10,001 reps in about 23 hours and 34 minutes. Along the way, he blew past the current Guinness World Records listed mark of 7,479, though the new record still needs to be officially certified.

The attempt was four years in the making and included more than 100,000 training chin-ups over the previous eight months. But the bigger number may be the $15,000+ raised for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a cause close to Brush after his grandfather suffered from Parkinson’s disease. ($)

Lanternflies Are Everywhere 🪰

Spotted lanternflies are having a moment on the North Fork, and unfortunately, it’s not the kind anyone asked for.

The invasive insects are turning up on trees, buildings, sidewalks and even floating in Peconic Bay. For local vineyards, the bigger concern is what happens next: lanternflies feed by piercing plants and sucking out sap, with grapevines among their favorite targets.

There may be some tiny reinforcements on the way. The USDA is studying the potential release of Dryinus sinicus, a parasitic wasp smaller than a housefly that naturally targets spotted lanternflies.

For now, Cornell Cooperative Extension says pesticides aren't necessarily the answer. When lanternflies congregate on trees and buildings, residents can simply vacuum them up with a shop or backpack vacuum. And despite their impressive ability to annoy nearly everyone, they don't bite people or pets, damage buildings or survive long indoors.
