Another Extension Request, Hellenic Turns 50, Shakespeare Reimagined

Together With Tim O’Keefe
Good Morning, North Fork! Happy Fourth of July weekend! America turns 250 this Saturday, which feels like a pretty good excuse to fire up the grill, watch some fireworks, and pretend calories don't count for a few days. A quick reminder: there won't be a newsletter tomorrow because The Buzz team is taking the day off to properly prepare for the nation's birthday.
In today’s North Fork Buzz:

Hellenic Turns 50
Shakespeare Reimagined
Ready, Set, Go!
P.S. This edition is packed tighter than a 4th of July cooler. With all the live music your email provider might hit you with a “message clipped” notice. So if you see those pesky three dots (...), give ’em a click, there’s still plenty of good stuff waiting for you.

The Local Advantage 🏠
As we celebrate America's 250th birthday this Fourth of July, it's worth remembering that the story of independence wasn't written all at once. Even after the Declaration of Independence was signed, the fight for freedom continued, including right here on the North Fork.
In May 1777, nearly a year after the Declaration of Independence was signed, about 160 Patriot soldiers crossed Long Island Sound from Connecticut under the command of Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs. Historians believe they landed near what is now Southold Town Beach, dragged their whaleboats across the North Fork, launched into Peconic Bay, and sailed to Sag Harbor.
Their mission? Surprise the British.
The result? About 90 prisoners captured and not a single Patriot lost.
So this Fourth of July, as you drive down North Road or head to the beach before the parade, take a moment to remember that the fight for American independence wasn't just happening in distant cities. Some of it happened right here in our backyard.
Around here, history isn't locked away in museums. It's woven into the roads we drive, the beaches we visit, and the communities we call home.
Happy Independence Day, and we'll see you at the parade.

The Lowdown
Another Extension Request 🏨
The developers behind The Enclaves resort hotel in Southold are back before the Planning Board seeking a third extension as financing delays continue to hold up construction.
The proposed 44 room resort would include two restaurants, a spa, and an event space, but work has been stalled while developers navigate a lengthy federal review process tied to a USDA backed loan.
Developers say they've already invested more than $14 million in private equity and are now 60 to 90 days away from closing on financing. If the loan closes, they say construction could restart almost immediately.

Hellenic Turns 50 🇬🇷
Hellenic Restaurant turns 50 on July 4, and owner George Giannaris is marking the occasion the same way Hellenic has operated for decades: good food, Greek hospitality, and plenty of stories around the table.
The anniversary celebration kicks off Saturday at 6 PM with live Greek music under the restaurant's iconic black walnut tree, plus a handful of special menu items alongside the regular favorites.
Back in 1976, George's father, John Giannaris, literally stepped in front of a bulldozer to save the original snack bar from being torn down. Fifty years later, that decision looks pretty good.
Over the decades, Hellenic has evolved from a small roadside snack bar into a North Fork institution, but plenty has stayed the same. The fresh squeezed lemonade still has a cult following, local produce still fills the kitchen, and multiple generations of families still celebrate life's biggest moments around its tables.

Shakespeare Reimagined 🎭
Northeast Stage is bringing one of the Bard's lesser known plays, All's Well That Ends Well, to audiences across the East End this summer, but not exactly the way it was performed 400 years ago.
Director Nicholas Auletti chose the rarely staged comedy because of its complicated characters, messy relationships, and reputation as one of Shakespeare's most debated works. After spending months analyzing the text, he and his cast developed a fresh interpretation designed to connect with modern audiences.
One of the biggest changes comes during the play's infamous "bed trick" scene, a plot point that has challenged directors for decades. Rather than staging it literally, Northeast Stage has transformed the sequence into a stylized dance, shifting the tone and making the story's themes feel more accessible to today's viewers.
The production is also embracing a true touring theater approach. Performances will move between parks, churches, and venues throughout the East End, requiring the cast to constantly adapt the show to each new space.

Greenport Rotary Helps Keep Books Coming 📚
The Greenport Rotary is helping keep books in the hands of local kids, donating $1,000 to Floyd Memorial Library to support its participation in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program.
The donation will help cover postage costs for the program, which currently delivers a free book each month to about 70 local children under age 5. Library Director Ellen Nasto said the funding helps ensure the program can continue reaching young readers throughout the community.
To celebrate, Floyd Memorial Library hosted a special event featuring local author Nina Ross, who read the latest book in her Montauk Mike series and led a hands on craft inspired by the story. ($)
