The Lowdown

Saving Scallops 🛟

The East End scallop scene is in rough waters. The 2024–25 season brought in less than 1,000 pounds of scallops — a heartbreaking drop from over 110,000 pounds just a few years ago. The culprit? Mass die-offs, leaving baymen struggling and the iconic fishery at risk.

But hope isn’t lost! Cornell Cooperative Extension and New York State are stepping up, dropping $350,000 on research to help scallops bounce back. They’re testing out hardy scallops from Moriches Bay and Martha’s Vineyard in Peconic Bay, hoping these resilient recruits can revive the local population.

Local baymen are playing a huge role, too — keeping an eye on the waters and helping researchers understand what’s really happening beneath the surface. It’s a long road to recovery, but with teamwork and science, the East End might just get its scallops back.

Grow Local, Give Local 🌱

The Common Ground Garden in Southold needs your green thumbs (or even not-so-green thumbs)! They’re hosting a volunteer meeting on March 15 at 10 a.m. at the Peconic Lane Community Center, and they’re on the hunt for helpers to keep their garden thriving.

This isn’t just about plants — it’s about community. The garden donates fresh produce to local food pantries, so every weed pulled and veggie picked makes a difference. Never gardened before? No worries. They’ll teach you everything you need to know.

Come dig in, get your hands dirty, and help grow something great! ($)
