The Lowdown
Hoops, Hype & Heart 🏀
The Aldrich basketball courts were on fire Saturday as the first-ever Community Kids Basketball Tournament tipped off in Laurel. Four local squads, First Responders, Chef Currys, Faculty Flames, and Community All-Stars, battled it out in front of a lively crowd. The games? Nonstop action, back-and-forth leads, and yes, even a few buzzer-beaters.
The tourney was a tag-team effort between Aldrich Sports League and NoFo Kid Connect, and it was nothing short of a slam dunk.
But this wasn’t just about hoops. Every dollar raised goes right back to the North Fork youth sports scene and scholarships for local student-athletes.
Shoutout to Joe Aiello and Francis Buonaiuto for launching this event, and if you missed it? No worries. Organizer Destiny Salter says they’re already planning for next year. ($)

Lt. Col. Charles Sanders Heads Back Overseas 🇺🇸
Last Friday night, the community packed into the Griswold-Terry-Glover American Legion Post 803 to give Lt. Col. Charles Sanders a proper Southold sendoff before his fourth overseas deployment in 15 years.
Sanders isn’t just a military man, he’s also Southold’s town tax assessor, a local business owner, a former American Legion commander.
At 57, he’s headed to the Middle East for up to a year, adding another chapter to a career that’s included deployments to Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, and more. And despite all those tours? He’s never had to fire his weapon, something he calls a blessing.

Home Runs & Heartstrings 🥎💚

Step up to the plate and support a powerful cause at the Dylan Newman Forever 5 Foundation’s annual Softball Tournament and Chinese Auction. This special event honors the legacy of Dylan Newman, a courageous young man who lost his battle with Ewing Sarcoma at just 18 years old, but whose spirit, strength, and kindness continue to inspire.
Whether you’re playing ball, cheering from the sidelines, or taking a chance on amazing auction prizes, your participation helps make a lasting impact.
The Forever 5 Foundation is dedicated to keeping Dylan’s memory alive through meaningful giving. Bring your friends, bring your team spirit, and bring your hearts, because this day is about more than softball. It’s about honoring a life, lifting up others, and rallying together as a community.
