The Lowdown

Going 2D ✏️

Front Street is about to get a little flatter.

2D Shop is opening at 310 Front Street on Sept. 26, timed perfectly with the first day of Greenport’s Maritime Festival. And the name is pretty literal: the entire store is designed to make visitors feel like they’ve walked into a black and white coloring book.

Created by Ron Rose and his son Jake, the shop takes Jake’s longtime Color Our Town coloring book concept and turns it into an actual place. Bold black outlines cover the walls, floors, furniture and merchandise, creating the illusion that just about everything has been flattened onto a page.

The merchandise gets the same treatment. There are 2D style bags, pins, cups, plates, chess sets and even sneakers, all perfectly functional despite looking like someone drew them five minutes ago. ($)

Poppy Johnson Introspective 🎨

Long before Greenport artist Poppy Johnson spent 40 years behind the desk at Floyd Memorial Library, she was sitting on museum floors protesting the Vietnam War, making art from whatever she could find and occasionally getting herself into the right kind of trouble.

Now, the library where so many locals know her is putting her artwork on the walls.

“Poppy Johnson Introspective” opens Friday, Sept. 18, showcasing sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, collages and assemblages spanning decades of a wonderfully unconventional career.

Her story starts well before Greenport. Johnson studied etching in Paris, became immersed in New York City's late1960s guerrilla art movement and protested alongside groups pushing museums and galleries to rethink everything from war and racism to sexism and artists' rights.

Then, in the early 1980s, Greenport entered the picture.

After being priced out of a Tribeca loft, Johnson moved with her children into a burned out former laundry building on Carpenter Street.

When studio space and art supplies were scarce, Johnson improvised. She painted with nail polish, glued found objects together and once rescued discarded wooden letters from an old Main Street pizza shop sign and turned them into a piece called “The Beginning of Art.”

She later became part of Greenport's bustling 1990s art scene and even created “Art Money,” a concept where artists made their own currency to exchange for goods and services around town.

Sunday Morning Garden Crew 🌱

Six years ago, the garden outside Minnow at the Galley Ho in New Suffolk had a mugwort problem. The invasive plant had basically taken over.

The space was first planted with natives after the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund developed the property in 2016. Echinacea, bee balm, mountain mint, rudbeckia, native grasses and other plants were brought in to turn a septic field dotted with manhole covers into something considerably nicer to look at.

By 2020, the mugwort had other plans.

Local volunteers responded the old fashioned way: pulling it out by hand. They dug up roots, hauled away load after load and replanted the cleared sections. Six years later, the payoff is a thriving native meadow filled with plants that feed and shelter local pollinators.

Keeping it that way falls largely to the Meadow Mavens, a group of about 10 volunteers who gather Sunday mornings during the growing season to weed, plant, maintain paths and occasionally remind an overly enthusiastic native plant that it also needs to behave.

Animal of The Week

Meet Tater & Dipper 🐾

Meet Tater & Dipper. Some friendships are simply non-negotiable. Tater and Dipper have been together since they were kittens, and after growing up side by side, these two best friends are hoping their next adventure comes with one very important thing: a home together.

Tater, the handsome all black gentleman, is sweet, playful, and a big fan of attention, pets, and a good brushing. He can be a little shy when you first meet him, but give him some time and his personality starts to come out.

Dipper, his black and white partner in crime, is similarly gentle and reserved at first, but once he feels comfortable, he settles into being a wonderful little companion.

The funny part? Tater isn't exactly looking to expand his feline social circle. But Dipper is his guy. Their bond is something special, and after spending their whole lives together, the hope is to find someone with enough room on the couch for both.

They've already found their best friend. Now Tater and Dipper just need to find their home.
