The Ducks Are Coming Back š¦
Long Islandās last duck farm just got the green light to start quacking again.
After a brutal avian flu outbreak wiped out nearly 100,000 ducks, Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue, yes, the OG of Long Island duck, was placed under USDA quarantine. But as of May 12, theyāre officially in the clear.
Owner Douglas Corwin isnāt wasting any time. Heās already restocking with healthy ducks: some from salvaged eggs, others from a nearby poultry farm. If all goes well with the testing, even more ducks will waddle home soon.
Hereās the frustrating part: there is an avian flu vaccine... but itās not approved in the U.S. Why? Because the chicken export industry fears it might hurt trade. So for now, farmers are flying blind.
Before the outbreak, Crescent supplied nearly 4% of the nationās duck meat, mostly to fancy restaurants with even fancier menus. But after laying off most of its 72-person staff, Corwin says he wonāt be able to fully rehire until at least late 2026, when egg production ramps back up.
Still, the community isnāt letting this story end in silence. A February fundraiser called āFlock Togetherā raised $33,000 to support the workers who were laid off.

Revenge is a dish best served with a lacrosse stick.
The Mattituck/Greenport/Southold (MGS) girls lacrosse squad is heading back to the Suffolk County Class D finals this Saturday, May 31, at 9 AM at Smithtown West High School. And guess whoās waiting for them? Top-seeded Babylon, the same team that broke their hearts in last yearās final and knocked them out of the basketball playoffs this year.
But this year, the Tuckers are locked in and out for redemption. Junior standouts Page Kellershon, Gianna Calise, and Claire McKenzie are leading the charge, all part of the crew that took home the title in 2023.
Theyāre riding high after crushing Center Moriches 19-6 in the semis. Now, itās all eyes on Saturday. Letās go, Tuckers! ($)
