Hallockville’s Big Birthday Bash 🎂

Hallockville Museum Farm is throwing a double celebration this weekend, 50 years of Hallockville + the 44th annual Country Fair. Translation: wagon rides, pony rides, tractor pulls, and more jam than your toast can handle.

Before the fair even opens, the real showdown happens: jams, jellies, pumpkins, and potatoes face off for blue ribbons.

  • Jaymee Sire (yes, the Food Network host) is a first-time judge and says the key to perfect jam is balance, not too sweet, not too runny, not too stiff.

  • Local jam queen Laura Klahre is bringing a raspberry-blueberry “queen’s jam” and a blueberry-violet combo that sounds fancy enough to have its own Bon Appétit cover.

  • Over at the veggie table, Joanne Zilnicki of Zilnicki Farms will judge potatoes, focusing on appearance and firmness.

And when the ribbons are handed out, there’s still a whole fair to enjoy: kids’ train rides, historic tours, glass pumpkin patch, plus food trucks, music, and artisan booths.

Parents Sound the Alarm 🚨

Security was the hot topic at Tuesday’s Mattituck-Cutchogue school board meeting. Parents said they’ve walked into the high school with no one at the front desk, and they’re worried.

Superintendent Shawn Petretti says security staff are now patrolling the 26 entrances instead of just sitting at the desk, and he’s happy with coverage overall.

Athletic Director Gregg Wormuth is serving as district security supervisor through December, and two new full-time guards (one a former NYPD officer) were hired last week. ($)
