Great Pond’s Makeover šŸ§‘ā€šŸŒ¾

On Saturday, August 23, neighbors, volunteers, and a crew of eco-warriors from the Group for the East End, the Kenney’s/McCabe’s Beach Civic Association, and the Town of Southold are teaming up to clear out two acres of those pesky reeds at Great Pond Preserve. The goal? Replace them with native beauties like swamp milkweed, rose mallow, blue flag iris, and sweet pepperbush.

This isn’t a new fight. Back in 2019, three acres of phragmites were yanked out with a hydro-rake (basically a giant pond weed-whacker), and native plants have been reclaiming the shoreline ever since. Thanks to fresh funding from a Long Island Sound Study grant, round two kicks off this month.

Want in? Volunteers meet at Lake Court at 9 AM for coffee, get a crash course in phragmite-busting, then head to the water.

East End’s Quirkiest Rules šŸ“œ

The East End isn’t just beaches, rosĆ©, and celebrities. It’s also home to some very specific local laws, the kind that could technically cost you $1,000 if you break them.

Southold’s Odd Rules

Southold’s got two beauties still on the books:

  • Duck Drama: You can raise ducks all you want, but once you hit 100, you’ll need a note from the Town Board. This rule has waddled along for over 50 years.

  • No Coasting Allowed: A 1915 ordinance bans cyclists from taking both feet off the pedals to coast. The same code says no hanging onto moving cars and yes, you better signal properly. Basically, Tour de France rules.

Elsewhere on the East End

  • Southampton: No bikinis on Main Street. And keep your graffiti and your filth to yourself.

  • Sag Harbor: Don’t strip in public (or in your wagon). Also, leave your goats and pigs at home.

  • East Hampton: Officially a nuclear-free zone. No bombs, no reactors, no funny business.

Turkey Comeback 🦃

Long Island’s turkey population is strutting its stuff (literally).

These birds disappeared from the East End centuries ago thanks to farming and habitat loss, but in the ’90s the DEC trucked in about 75 wild turkeys from upstate. Fast forward to now and the flock has flourished so much there’s even a spring hunting season in Suffolk County.

Turkeys aren’t just feathered lawn ornaments either. They snack on insects, nuts, and grasses (yes, a few ticks too), and their presence boosts biodiversity. But don’t get any ideas about tossing them birdseed, feeding turkeys makes them bold, sometimes aggressive, and very quick to associate people with food. ($)
