The Lowdown
Saving the Waterfront ā
On Monday, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine stood on the Greenport dock and signed a bill with big waves for the East End. The new Working Waterfront Protection Program makes sure commercial waterfronts, the docks where fishermen unload, shellfish growers work, and boatbuilders fix their craft stay just that.
Developers have been circling, scooping up waterfront property to turn into mega-homes and condos. This law locks in easements so these spots canāt be lost to luxury living.
Think of it like farmland preservation, but for the sea. Suffolk will invest $9.5 million from 2026ā2028 to keep the maritime economy afloat.
From Montauk to Greenport, fishing has been at the heart of Suffolk for centuries. Now, thanks to this bill, the next generation of captains, oyster farmers, and boatbuilders just might have a dock to call home.

Vandenburgh Back at BIDās Helm š¤
Greenport Brewingās own Richard Vandenburgh is back at the helm of the Greenport Business Improvement District. When Nancy Kouris stepped down as BID president earlier this month, Rich didnāt hesitate to slide back into a role he held for nearly a decade.
Whatās on his to-do list?
-Keep downtown buzzing with events and activities.
-Help local businesses not just survive but grow.
-Snag more grant money for infrastructure fixes.
If his first term is any hint, Rich knows how to get it done. This time around, heās promising more transparency, more collaboration, and smoother communication, both with BID members and the village. ($)

North Fork Walk to End Alzheimerās š
On Saturday, more than 400 walkers turned Peconic Landing purple for the Third Annual North Fork Walk to End Alzheimerās. By the time the last step was taken, the community had raised over $123,000, blowing past the goal of $86,800.
Families lifted their colored flowers high in the Promise Garden Ceremony: yellow for caregivers, purple for those lost, blue for those fighting the disease, and a single white bloom for the first survivor weāre all hoping for.
With over 30,000 people in Suffolk County living with Alzheimerās, the fight hits close to home. But Saturday proved when the North Fork comes together, hope feels a little less out of reach.

Dog of The Week
Meet Laika š¾
Meet Laika, she is the kind of pup who does it all. One minute sheās zooming around with the neighbor dogs, the next sheās curled up at your side begging for belly rubs. Sheās house-trained, crate-trained, knows all her basics (sit, paw, down, place) and sometimes offers her paw just because she loves you.
Sheās also the ultimate work-from-home sidekick. Desk time? Sheāll nap nearby. Couch time? Sheās your snuggle buddy. The only thing missing is her forever person.
Sure, sheās still working on her leash confidence, but she makes up for it with the little things: morning āhiāsā during showers, chomping on ice cubes, and stealing spoonfuls of yogurt like itās gourmet.
Laikaās spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and overflowing with gratitude for her second chance. Now she just needs you.

Trivia Time š§
Your brain deserves more than scrolling and skimming. Each week weāll hit you with one question designed to make you pause, scratch your head, and maybe argue with whoeverās sitting next to you. Think of it as a quick mental pit stop: a chance to flex your random knowledge, test your memory, or finally use that obscure fact you learned in 7th grade.
On this day in history, Henry Fordās company introduced the Model T, revolutionizing transportation. In what year did this happen? |
