The Lowdown

ZBA Email Scam 🚨

Southold officials are warning residents about fraudulent emails pretending to come from the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals and asking recipients to send money.

The fake messages include payment links or attachments, but there’s one important thing to know: the ZBA does not request fee payments by email. Those fees are paid through the town’s normal process at Town Hall or the ZBA office.

Residents who get a suspicious message should skip the links and attachments and contact the ZBA directly to verify it. Anyone who has already sent money or financial information should contact their bank and Southold Town Police. ($)

Local Photography on Display 📸

The North Fork Arts Center is putting local photographers in the frame with IMPACT, a new juried exhibition that could be the start of something bigger.

Photographers Paul Henry and Jeremy Garretson are looking for images that tell a story, stir a reaction or simply make someone stop and look twice. Pros, hobbyists and students can all submit, and there’s no entry fee.

The show is also a bit of a test run. Henry hopes it can help connect the North Fork’s photography crowd and eventually lead to workshops, classes and other programs for both adults and students.

Submissions are due Aug. 24, with selected works going on display this fall. The exhibition opens with a public reception Oct. 24 at the North Fork Arts Center.

Blues Night Returns 🎸

After selling out its debut last summer, Blues Night is heading back to the North Fork Arts Center for round two. The 295 seat Sapan Greenport Theatre will host the show Saturday, Aug. 15.

This year’s lineup pulls straight from the New York City blues scene. Vocalist Seydurah Avecmoi and blues guitarist Bobby Bryan will open the night, followed by Saron Crenshaw and his band. Veteran bassist and promoter Mike Griot will serve as MC. ($)

National Leadership Honor 🏛

Mattituck High School rising senior Trevor Fitzgerald turned a summer leadership program into a pretty impressive trip to the next level.

Fitzgerald was selected for the American Legion’s Boys State, where students get a hands on crash course in government by drafting legislation, holding office and essentially building their own version of state government.

Trevor served as Senate Majority Whip and wrote a bill focused on regulating salinity levels in coastal farmland soil.

Then came the bigger news: Trevor was chosen as one of just two delegates from the entire program to advance to Boys Nation.

Local Spotlight

Last Call at Flavor Fork 🍽

Change is coming to one of Greenport’s newer culinary spots. After a little more than a year of cooking classes, private dinners, grab and go bites and plenty of time spent around the table, Flavor Fork will close its brick and mortar space at 402 First Street on October 1.

Owner Sarah Mastracco opened Flavor Fork in the summer of 2025 with a simple idea: use food as a way to bring people together. During its time in Greenport, the space became home to hands on cooking classes, celebrations, corporate events and community gatherings.

But this isn’t the end of Flavor Fork. Sarah is taking the business in a new direction, drawing on her background in professional kitchens, hospitality and television production to work as a creative consultant with brands, agencies, destinations and hospitality organizations. She also plans to continue hosting pop-up cooking classes and experiences, developing recipes and collaborating with chefs and brands.
